1. Dont see options to change drive that is being used, I assume c: but want it to run on e: that has 3x more free space

2. told to run 100% processor unless Im using 25% or more, shows only using 13% on 1 of 8 (hyper threads I guess) tho its a dual core also

3. option to have screensaver that is just a graphic process like years ago when I just expanded the process of the signal to full screen, not a floaty low res screen saver...

Sorry havent beeen processing for 10 years so #3 is a wish list :-)

fixed #2 somehow, started using all cpus threads

#3 is ok at here - custom Set all "oscillation" to 0 (zero) here:
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/prefs.php?subset=project

would still like a simple graph left to right

also set to 5% usage and cpu at 90 so dont think the saver will impact workload

4. cant find VLARKiller or rescheduler, Lunatics apps gives Invalid ID and milkyway was an invalid site...perhaps the post was wrong where I found it

That's part of the installation process (third screen, select "Advanced").

If you want to change it:

  • spot your BOINC data directory (it is listed in the Messages tab after a restart of BOINC)
  • stop BOINC completely ("Shut down connected client")
  • uninstall BOINC (that leaves the data directory intact)
  • move the data directory to where you want it
  • reinstall BOINC directing the installer to the new location of the data directory
  • restart BOINC (should continue where it left off)

Gruß,
Gundolf

"•uninstall BOINC (that leaves the data directory intact)"

so that changes the install dir but what about all the data? it would still be on c: correct or does boinc transfer the data to its own directory?

I have 160gb free just wanted to put it on the 350gb free game drive, wasnt sure how much it needs size wise.

It would still be on drive C:, which is why the next step tells you to move the folder from C: to whatever drive you wish.

160GB should be more than enough space, depending on which projects you join and what your cache settings are. If you crunch SETI@Home only, then 0.05GB should be more than enough.

There are two directories that you can set during the install. The first is the "install" or "executables" directory, and since this is fairly small, it does quite well in its default location of c:\program files\BOINC. The second is the data directory and its default location depends on the OS that you are using. For example, I believe that XP sets this to c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC. The default for Vista and Windows 7 is c:\programdata\BOINC.

Note that in the above paths, "Application Data" and "ProgramData" are hidden directories. You can Type the whole path or show hidden directories to get there.

It doesnt seem to have taken much space even with 5 days of work available

so i guess it is fine default dirs and all

thanks for the info tho.

now if I could get TThrottle to stop starting up after uninstall

but I put that under the windows section.

SETI does not take much space. Other projects, on the other hand, take quite a bit more space.

Message 1098309 - Posted: 17 Apr 2011, 3:45:50 UTC

I cant find where to ask for this type of help so i hope you dont mind me posting here.
I have Boinc version 10.6.60 installed, my pc is windows xp home edition version 2002-sp3
with AMD 64 processor 3,500 + 2.21 GHz, 512 MB RAM.
150 Gb hard drive.
i have had no problems till now, when i update my preferences a couple of days ago
a message came back from Seti@home (enhanced) saying i need 32Mb more disc space yet my disc space is showing i have 46.26 Gb free, used by other program's is 102.73 Gb, used by Boinc is 64.96 Mb Used by Seti@home 57.69Mb.
My Preferances are 10Gb for boinc and leave at least 40Gb free, use at most %100 of disc space and same for all other settings asking for percentage of use.
Is there anything i can do to fix this, i cant see why it is asking for more disc space, also my graphic screen saver has not worked since this issue.
could it be not enough RAM?
Thank you.
Michael

No, it wouldn't be RAM because the message says disc space.

Based upon the information you gave, you have 46GB of free space on your hard drive (of unknown size), you told BOINC that it can use up to 10GB but that it must leave at least 40GB free.

If you open BOINC Manager and click on the Disk tab (assuming BOINC v6.10.x), in the graph on the left, there's an informational box. What does it say for "Free, available to BOINC"?

Issue solved, i reduced amount of disk space available for Boinc from 40gig to 30gig, using at most 8gig.
thank you for your interest, i think i was asking too much of my Hard drive not allowing enough room for all my other programs.
I am hoping to get a new pc soon with a quad 4 processor and larger RAM (4gig if i can), larger GPU, 500 Gig HD, short of getting two pc's do you think having 2 quad 4's, larger mother board, RAM, GPU and larger fan etc. would allow me to do alot more from seti rather than just have one quad 4, larger RAM, GPU etc. Do you have any suggestions for my new pc i am getting built to enable me to do more from Boinc with seti, astro, orbit and milky way, i realize i wouldnt be able to do all at same time (short of getting a pc for each one) but would like to do download faster, process faster for each one. any suggestions would be appreciated, the only limit is cost.
P.S im still not getting the 3d screen saver showing the analysis being done, any ideas, im only getting BOINC and a progress bar with the name of what is being done, should i remove and reinstall Boinc.
Thank you,
Michael

For the projects that can use a GPU, the GPU is much faster at processing than a CPU. If you are considering buying more cores vs a better graphics card, the better graphics card will probably get you more bang for the buck. (Please make certain your new graphics card is actually compatible with your chosen projects first).
