Dumb question: What's the purpose of the glass door ?

It's actually not a glass door in that picture -- while some racks that do not have very hot components inside have glass doors, that's not this kind.

This rack is the sort that has a fine steel mesh on the front that allows cool air to be pulled in through it. The heated air is then blown out the back of the rack (which has a similar door on it).

Both of these doors have locks and latches on them -- when closed and locked in this fashion, no one can physically access the equipment inside the rack -- i.e., it's "secure".

Never underestimate dumb! Will a toothpick fit through the mesh? Where there's stupidity there's a way! :-)

I have one Test4Theory unit running and 5 SETI@home units, one running and 4 waiting to run. Troppa Grazia, Sant' Antonio, they say in Italy.

Never underestimate dumb! :) That's sage and well-proven advice.

These racks are usually housed at datacenters so the number of roving kids with toothpicks is pretty low. However, the idea of "secure" isn't meant to encompass that level of mischievousness, but rather to stop people from filching one of your redundant hot-swap power supplies, taking your drives or accessing your servers via its USB ports with a roll-up keyboard and monitor, etc.

While less vital in terms of S@H, servers that have financial data, credit card info, or that are transacting business in any way are more likely targets for physical tampering. After all, you can have great network security but if someone slips into your datacenter and walks out with all of your server drives, you're in a far worse spot than if you had a network intrusion.

That simply means that the feeder was empty when you hit it. If you look at the server status page, you'll see there's quite a cache of tasks waiting.

My biggest issue is slow slow slow download times. 0.19kbps slow.

Take a look at the number of WU in your pending queue, multiply by 100, and that's a good first estimate at the credit that you have not been credited with. Since the removal of the query behind the old pending button you have to do it on a per-cruncher basis. I think it would be fair to estimate that you've got enough WU completed by you but not validated to get to 9 million and some....

Every week or two I record my S@H/BOINC statistics in a spreadsheet. This allows me to make longitudinal comparisons of my S@H/BOINC activities. During June, my S@H rank remained relatively stable at ~520 and I was receiving credit for approximately 20,000-21,000 WU/day. During the last 6 weeks, my S@H rank has creeped "up" to 496. However, during this period I received credit for approximately 19,500 WU/day. My data suggest that S@H is experiencing a slight decrease in productivity, at least by the medium-high end crunchers, and that my boxes (17 Macs ranging from PowerBook G4s to 8-core Xeon Mac Pros) are being affected somewhat less than others. Is anyone else seeing something similar? Could my observations be associated with the raw data distribution issues discussed in this and other threads? FWIW, my Einstein@Home productivity has increased from approximately 7,000 WU/day in June to approximately 8,500 WU/day during the last 6 weeks.

BTW, I have not made any relevant hardware changes in the last 6 weeks.

TIA for sharing your thoughts on this topic.

Well, I still can DownLoad SETI work and have almost too much, but didn't
yet look at the 0.4AR MB against VLAR MB work units.
(Last friday, I thought my 5870s has had it, but it were MilkyWay WUs, with
100% fan @82C and 78C for the i7-2600, it consumed 525Watt, with Collatz C.
500Watt and SETI Bêta MB WUs, 2 per 5870, 385Watt, CPU is doing 1 MB and
7 CPDN WUs).

Other rigs, 3 QUADs (2x Q6600+1 X9650) also have SETI work, besides Einstein
, GPUgrid, Docking, etc.
As a matter of fact, I've never been out of work, maybe 1 day on 1 rig, concerning
SETI or SETI Bêta.
Most of the afternoons, I have to swith the AC on, if it isn't already on AUTO
in which case, I can not cook or use the micro-wave, the second main-fuse gives
out, after 10 to 15 minutes! And, since it's triple-fase, all juice is switched off,
until I replace this 20Amp.slow,(supposed to be 16A)
.

SERVER -Page shows: As of 6 Aug 2011 | 15:10:16 UTC] and only
AP splitters and validators
, are Not Running.

Keep pushing them BOINC Buttons, buttons have to be pushed.................

Reinstalled boinc today on one of the linux servers. It got a few WU's which was done within a few hours.

But, when looking at the status for the machine, http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/results.php?hostid=5256434&offset=0&show_names=0&state=1&appid= it says that it has 96 WUs pending.

Looking into the BOINC/projects/setiathome.berkeley.edu directory, there is hardly any files at all:
[userx@r2-d2 ~]$ cd BOINC/projects/setiathome.berkeley.edu/
[userx@r2-d2 setiathome.berkeley.edu]$ ls -l

And the debug output file indicate that no files has been uploaded, only a few been downloaded.

I would like to see some kind of explanation about this? I have been trying to run SETI under linux for months, but it seems to be almost impossible.

I've installed (EDU)(U)BUNTU and by accident another 4 64BIT versions.
But, still learning and interresting to install a BOINC version for one of these
*NUXses, cause I like the blazing BOOT, File and Disk Control and all
is free and open-source.
A bit off TOPIC, so I'll ask at Questions and Answers section LINUX on the
main menu!

two of them are getting quite a few download errors through, i wonder what fixed it for him.

And I stick to Windows (7)64BIT for (GPU) crunching, for now.

My knowledge of UNIX f.e. a or the predecessor of *NUX versions, is almost
zero, unfortunatly.
And (ED)(U)BUNTU 64BIT version are nice, have a lot of good software.
But not all versions are useable for BOINC and GPGPU.
(They use OpenGL for 'graphics'.)

But back on topic and can hear Milkyway has send some work again, cause
only then both fans are going to 100% at 82C.
(And isn't MW also using a BROOK+ version, for their calculations?)

First, been away for some time, but back again now.

Dahls - I've just looked at another thread about unable to get downloads, do uploads or report finished tasks. It would appear there is "a problem" with the .13 address, so forcing which forcing the use of the .18 address overcomes.

I think what is happening is that Linux is trying the lower (.13) ip address every time it attempts, not knowing about the higher (.18) address - hence your earlier comment about being able to work properly if you for the host address to the .18 address.

I'm not sure what you mean by .13 and .18 address. Which address?

I reinstalled BOINC on the dual and triple core machines. After some time they began to get data. However, today I noticed that the triple core is once again in a bad state. It won't report tasks (sorry for the long listing of lines from the log file):

When I look at the http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=5256434 it seems that the last time of contact was at the time when the number of completed tasks to report began to increase.

When the number of tasks to report reached 19, my machine began to receive Error 500 from the server:

And this has happened every time this machine has had problems. I also notice that number of tasks to report increase, the number of bytes sent in the header from my machine also increase. PErhaps this again may cause a buffer overflow at the other end, which cause the error 500?
However, 19 tasts (and 109508 bytes in the header) should not be that much?

This is just a wild guessing.

BOINC at the "bad" machine will not be stopped and reinstalled once again (for the 5th time that is).

WOW... This might be the solution:

    - Stopped BOINC
    - Downloaded the 6.12.34 and updated the current installation.
    - Modified cc_config.xml by adding <max_tasks_reported>10</max_tasks_reported>
    - Started it (*)

Now it seems to be able to report. And the computer list show that this machine HAS been in contact with SETI again. From the output file:

Perhaps my wild guessing about buffer overflow may not be that crazy after all??

*: Got an error that "libcurl4.so: No version information available". But this seem to be a warning, since boicn did start.

I suspect your problems have something to do how you're set up your server that controls your internet connect, that might be truncating your scheduler contacts,
hence my suggestion to take one of the problem hosts and connect it to a different ISP, or you can try connecting the problem host directly to the internet,

Using a different ISP is not possible at all. The server is a MySQL server running in production and cannot be moved or connected to any other network.

I'll check my firewall once again, but both servers should be configured in the same way.

However, after installing the new BOINC version, it seem to have stopped logging to the output file (the logging statments in the cc_config.xml file has not been changed, but after it reported the 10 work units, nothing more have happened).

boinccmd has also stopped working:
$ ./boinccmd -h
./boinccmd: error while loading shared libraries: libssl.so.0.9.8: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

yum say there is no such library as libssl.so to install.
