So yesterday morning I turned on one of my big Seti PC's (turned it off for some quiet sleeping) and after 45mn of it running I started smelling something like a hot electrical smell. I looked all around my room and saw nothing odd. I took the side off the case and looked in the computer and found the smell was much stronger so I knew where the smell was coming from. All the fans were spinning but the power supply fan. I tapped the base of the case right by the fan and it started spinning and went to full speed right off. Well this stopped the hot smell and now I have to RMA the power supply (1100 watt). It is currently in year 2 of 5 of warranty so I don't want to change the fan myself not knowing what else is wrong from the over heating. The tough part is going to be living without the computer for probably 3 weeks.

I have thought about getting a new 1500 watt power supply then I could install a 3rd card with no worries. They cost about $390 from Newegg and her lies another issue. I just ordered a 2011 VW Golf TDI Diesel ($24K ish US, delivered in about 90 days) to replace my aging 1998 VW Golf GTI 110K miles. The old car has numerous issues that would probably run as much as the car is worth or more to repair. I don't really want to throw another $400 at the computer currently plus another video card. If I did this it would require switching to water cooling all 3 video cards and the motherboard. That would run at least $1500.

Right now I am being pulled towards waiting for the RMA and just save money to pay off the car quick. What are your guys thoughts?

Contact the manufacturer and see if they would consider working an upgrade for you tied in with the warranty replacement. Some are quite flexible, some are not.
Otherwise, don't overextend yourself.....better to be without a cruncher for a few weeks rather than to have trouble with the first few car payments.

For a RMA they might do an advanced replacement. Where they send out a new unit right away putting a charge on a credit card until the old unit is received.

Oddly enough I have been thinking about upgrading my '99 Wolfsburg Jetta to a new TDI Golf as well. With 150k miles on the clock & still happily going around corners faster than most of my passengers prefer it is a hard decision.

That could be an option too, if they decline to do an upgrade.

Fact of the matter is.....you don't know until you ask them.
Cry on their shoulder a bit, tell them it would be hard for you to be without a computer for a couple of weeks, and see if they can help.

Yeah, I just changed out my rear struts on the car, that was one thing on the list of stuff that was wrong. It made driving and hitting bumps very interesting being only the back right one was completely gone.
