When you go to this site... Select the all the maximum values for each option. 144gb ram dual hex core XEON cores Max Tesla boards. next... sit down before looking at the price. This machine will kill any system there is at crunching SETI work but... you could buy a new BMW for the same cost as this computer. Mother of all Crunchers Hey.. if you can afford to and decide to buy one... I'm now unemployed and I could use some extra money.. Visit the Boinc.NET site and donate ;) I mean... If you can blow cash on something that burns power but returns nothing but bragging rights, you sure as heck can spare a few dollars for a hard working geek. Im very curious now.. How much have you people invested in SETI systems? I'll Start. system 1 --- around $800 including the 9800 GX2 I just added. system 2 --- About $650 with the new PSU and used 8800 GT I just added. Totals $1450.00 |

for seti only crunching, the GTX 580's will do every bit as well as the TESLA cards. They have their place, but for crunching only it is a waste of funds. Janice |

Hmm.. good question. For just the basics (CPU, mobo, GPU, RAM), a little under $1000. Including everything (sound card, PSU, HDDs, cooling etc), probably around the $2000 mark. Gonna pop in a GTX560 at some stage in the coming months, but for now, I'm happy with my RAC/power consumption :o |

You can easily spend as much configuring a workstation from Dell or HP. Money spend just to run SETI@Home: $0 Money spent in the past 2 years for computers/parts that happen to be running SETI@Home ~$1600. If you want some serious computing in a small footprint for a lot of money you should look at the SuperBlades from Super Micro. The blade chassis start at about $3500. The blades w/o cpu's, ram or video are around $1000 each. Then throw in 20 Xeons & 20 Teslas to really make your wallet melt. Two dedicated crunchers, a Q6600 + GTX470 and a X9650 + GTX480, Coolermaster cases, 3 PSU's. And a HD5870, not used a.t.m., about €3000.00 Forgot one 22'', make that 2, flatscreen Monitors= €475, so, €3475.00 And Upgraded a HP Pavillion 8000 which had an 8500GT, with a GTS250, but I use this rig as a music and home-movie server, also a HP Pavillion LT, screen failiar, within extended warranty (3 years), mainly used for SETI and other forums, but crunches too, as the other HP rig. So, these two are not included. :) As the electricity......And probably forgot some parts, (a now burnt HD4850); a HD5770; HD5870; 9800GTX+ 8500GT, without a suitable mobo, which will ad some more money.) But any 'hobby' or 'addiction', will cost you some money........ and in this case, it is for a good coarse, IMHO... |

Now you made me actually sit down and think about it. Some computers are used for web browsing, etc, some are worstationsat work, and some are dedicated just for Seti. But all were purchased with this in mind and grossly overkill for their "regular" usage, so really most of the expense can be attributed to Seti. So about 94,000.00 in all. Now I wish I had not really thought about it. |

I haven't spent a dime specifically for SETI@Home crunching, though the thought of crunching has influenced some of my purchases, but all my parts have been selected either because of an upgrade I was going to do anyway, or because I'm still trying to build my museum and they might as well run SETI (or they would if I had the money to afford the electricity). |

nothing here runs pure SETI only. Older desktop: about 1200. including monitor. About 3 years ago. Current desktop: about 1100. Including monitor, about 2 years ago. Older one: as soon as I got it home popped a (then) 100 dollar gt 9600 into it. had to replace a CPU fan about 6 months ago. Newer: popped out the stock GT220 and popped in a GT 430, about 6 months ago. Cost: about 85 +shipping. As soon as I can get my next one put together, I will power down the older system. Probably not this month. Janice |

Total hardware costs (19"Rack, UPS, Router, Switch, Server system and laptop) I think short amount of €10.000,- (at least, think a bit more also do!) thats on currect exchange $13.951,01 USD Electric costs are plus minus €1600,- thats on currect exchange $2.232,16 USD every year agian and again! :P But it's all for the science to search for green man (not that they are green!!! I think! :P .................. )! ;) :) I do what I can and I can what I do! :P |

Currently testing an i7-2600K (Sandy Bridge), stock speed, stock cooler* & 50% CPU usage. 8 WU's running, it consumes 60watts less than my (very) old, similarly configured EE 3.4 P4, stock speed & 20% CPU usage, aftermarket cooler, running 2 WU's. The i7 runs incredibly cool at those settings. WU's complete much more quickly too! * the i7 stock cooler looks puny but that's because the CPU is so efficient. Google a bit and you'll see how, on previous i7's, heatsinks got ridiculously big. (I have no association with Intel other than as a retail customer.) The difference between 0 and 1 is greater than the difference between 1 and 1,000,000 |

Currently testing an i7-2600K (Sandy Bridge), stock speed, stock cooler* & 50% CPU usage. I originally upgraded my P4 for 2 reasons. I needed a newer GPU & I had the best AGP at the time & to lower my power consumption. My C2D & 4870 use quiet a bit less power then my P4 system did on average. YIKES! Theres some real money spent on this. Well... The truth be known, If I had the money, Id build a refrigerated shack in the back yard, put an independent meter base on it, bring in 240 volts, surround it with motion detector lights, add an alarm system, build custom racks for mounting the hardware and fill it with the fastest CPUS and GPUs that money can buy along with the largest 240vac PSUnits I can find. If I could do that, Id be the crunching KING OF THE WORLD.. WORLD... WORLD.... echo..... echo...... echo........ Oh well.. :) One can dream I guess.... :) |

It's better that you didn't/don't blow that kind of money on hardware. It would all be obsolete in a year anyway. |

$350 -- 2x Craigslist PCs with ~3 year old AMD CPUs $170 -- 2x new GTS 250 GPUs (last year) $100 -- 1x GTX 460 GPU (this year) Total: $620, current RAC 27,400, which is 44 RAC/$1, or 2.2¢/RAC. I'm hoping that turned out be a good deal compared to other people's hardware, but either way, I've got no plans to spend anything else for quite a while. I'm satisfied that I'm doing my part for finding the aliens. |

I've always run SETI on computers I bought for other reasons, like most folks, I suppose. So, while my five year old Gateway cost like $800 or $900 when I bought it, and the P4 cost $1,000 way back when, I didn't spend not one dollar to crunch SETI. ... until I bought a GT 9800 for $89.00, which caused me to have to spend another $79.00 on a re-certified PCP&C power supply, and another $89.00 I spent on a GeForce 240 GT (before they were even cheaper). And I've got a junked case from an old PII (huge) that I'm probably going to stick a cheap motherboard in and a cheapish multi-core processor with "just enough" RAM; and then stick a good GPU in it --- all of which I'll buy a little along, getting it cheap when I can --- I might spend $500 more just "for fun," eventually. ...or I could fill my van's gas tank six times. There's perspective. Bret |
