It looks like the Japanese government is still down playing this problem.

Gee, the link works well enough here.
Since when did any form of radiation affect paper?

They may have been concerned about radioactive dust,
etc, on the paper?
the unions covering their backs against being sued,

They could be thinking that if there is no danger, why not use the machines to put people’s minds at rest.

Firstly I can't access the link you've given, but from the words it seems a Canadian mail official won't handle mail from Japan. Since when did any form of radiation affect paper?

Secondly, the Japanese are traditionally very nervous of nuclear power, and I think that the Japanese government have to tread very carefully between not witholding vital information, but also not causing widespread public panic.

Levels of radiation which are being seen outside the immediately affected areas are much higher than normal, but not injurious to human health. What we are probably seeing here in the case of the Canadian Mail, is the unions covering their backs against being sued, by advising their members to boycott stuff from Japan.

Ok It was an interesting read, All about a worry wort from the anal retentive Canadian Post Office, Yes the link worked here.

Does anyone know if Rome survived? It was predicted that there would be a major quake there yesterday that would level the city. I haven't seen anything in the news yet.

Nothing happened in Rome outside of a waste gas being used by some residents there, It was on the CNN website.

I rather think Carlos, that if Rome had been flattened you would have heard about it!

Oh yeah... But that's a reason Rome is called the Eternal City.
