well actually i think i understand the differences between S@H Enhanced and S@H Astropulse - Enhanced combs the data for the classic narrow-band signals, while Astropulse combs the data for broader-band, shorter-pulse signals. i guess AP also stands the chance of detecting signals from yet-to-be-discovered pulsars, black holes, and other astrophysical phenomena unlike Endhanced (which is a primary reason for interest in S@H these days...i'm also big into Einstein@Home for the same reason).

but unlike Enhanced and AP, which have links to explanations on the home page, i see nothing about Multibeam on the home page or on the message boards...well, ok i take it back - there are a few threads regarding Multibeam, but they're all in the GPU crunching forum and not in the S@H Science forum, and so they only address GPU issues and not the science behind Multibeam. how is Multibeam different from Enhanced or AP? what is it specifically designed to search for?...aside from the obligatory "little green men" answer of course ;-)

TIA,
Eric

because we don't run multibeam anymore its all seti@home enhanced which is in fact the multibeam with enhancements. Which is why we still abbreviate the name to MB

oh, so MB data is more or less the same as the classic S@H Enhanced data, only it is appropriated to work w/ ATI GPU's instead of CPU's? so if i'm running both AP and MB on my 5870 GPU, then there's no real reason to run AP and/or Enhanced on my CPU unless its not dedicated to another project, correct?

that would be correct. Normally, I just run MB on my CPU and AP and MB on my GPU. The obvious reason not to run AP on the CPU is that its just not timely enough compared to the GPU

thanks for the clarification Skildude. so i see folks use the terms Multibeam (MB) and Enhanced interchangeably, even when speaking of CPU tasks...

...

When Enhanced was first introduced, the data being crunched was from the single channel feed that had been used previously. On the graphics display it identified as "SETI@home Enhanced". But after the multibeam recorder was installed to take data from the ALFA receiver system, data from one of its 14 channels makes the graphics display identify as "SETI@home Multi-Beam". It's the same application and does the same processing of the data, though there are differences server-side in how the raw data is handled before being packaged as work units.

The real name as used by BOINC is "setiathome_enhanced" and the user friendly name as shown on the Applications page is "SETI@home Enhanced".
