My son is cooking and washing dishes and has 12 hour work days. ____________

Well now Esme, I suppose the answer to that depends on your operational definition of "housework". Eric and I have a very sexist division of labor, but it plays to our individual strengths and it works quite well for the two of us. If your definition of "housework" is a middle-class 1950's definition (cooking, cleaning, shopping, gardening etc), then you would say that I do most of the housework. If, however, you broaden your definition of "housework" to include car maintenance, chauffeuring services, financial planning and tech support, then I have to admit that I do none of these things well and I defer them ALL to 'Ole Pookers. Modern women AND modern men can typically do all the things in both the traditional and the broadened definitions of housework. Men should be given credit for doing "housework" every time they gas the darn car, yet I suspect that studies in which it is found that women do 90% of the housework define housework in a narrow and traditional manner. I go though much of my day largely oblivious of all the things that Eric does for the two of us, just as Eric goes much of his day probably thinking that the Blessed Virgin of Guadalupe descends each week from heaven to place clean underwear in his dresser drawers and recycle his Mountain Dew cans. It is only when Eric travels for a couple of weeks that I am painfully reminded of how very, very helpful he is with the "housework". Am I a bad feminist because I prefer to do the "girl jobs" and I prefer to let Eric do the "boy jobs"? Perhaps... but I prefer to think that Eric and I have divided up the housework fairly evenly based upon our likes and dislikes and our individual strengths and weaknesses. Our division of labor happens to fall down a fairly traditional sexist divide, but this does not mean that one or the other of us is a less important (or a more important) contributor to the "marital team".

	I like what I'm hearing there Angela, all sounds very sensible and suitable to me. I am quite happy to carry out DIY, service the car, mow the lawn, put the vacuum around, get up in the attic, paint or wallpaper etc. What I don't like doing is cooking or washing up, or the laundry. I'm a disaster in the kitchen, but I'm quite capable of washing and ironing 1/2 dozen shirts, if I have to. One of the Members of a Club that I belong too is a retired Counsellor that used to work 30 years for the Marriage Guidance Council, now called Relate. He said to me once that in his experience the marriages that tended to last the test of time mostly had three things in common. The man was 3 or 4 years older than the woman, the balance of personality strength was about equal, and they shared the partnership tasks leaning towards the traditional way. I think his age group was showing a bit there though! Relationships differ greatly according to age I think. I know a couple in their late twenties where the wife is a senior executive in one firm and he is a junior one in another. She gets home a lot later than he does, and by then he has got the dinner on and tidied up. They both share the gardening at weekends, but she pays for a home help for housework.
