Hello,

In all probability this has been a much discussed topic in the past, but i'm curious regarding the bottom-line stance on whether there is any ongoing development of software to make use of ATi GPU's in Mac OSX? I'm aware that earlier in the year a ATi OpenCL Multibeam app was brought out of beta for Windows, Linux etc but there appears to be no mention as to the status of an OSX app. I've posted on that thread for clarification regarding any information, but due to it being a windows thread i doubt it would yield anything concrete - but i might be wrong! Fingers crossed, i shall post any information passed along.

I don't know about all of you, but seeing a Pentium 4 running windows xp with an nvidia cuda card completing a WU x3 faster than my new 27" quad core i5 is a little embarrasing, ha.

If there already is one - I shall gladly crawl into a corner and die :D

Oh, as an FYI - I didn't always have such a pitiful total/recent credit, I've come back to BIONC after some time and i couldn't remember my login details :S

Any info, musings would be appreciated!

Many thanks,

Adam :)

It looks like Apple is getting involved in OpenCL. You have to ask the Lunatics folks if they have anything cooking for OpenCL for Apple OSes

Actually Apple originally created OpenCL and then got ATI, Nvidia, Intel, IBM and some others on board to finalize it. It certainly is intended to be used on Macs. But CUDA has been available for Mac for some time too, and there hasn't been a Mac port of the CUDA app for Nvidia, so I am not exactly holding my breath for an OpenCL app.

I think that's what he was trying to do. Hopefully one of those folks can chime in and say I'm wrong about what's coming for Mac GPUs.

probably best to actually ask them on their own forums.

That is probably true.

This roadmap that Jason Gee created for the Lunatics builds might be helpful:

http://lunatics.kwsn.net/1-discussion-forum/lunatics-experimental-development-roadmap.msg36185.html#msg36185

The green stuff is done. Yellow is near term. Beige is medium term. Mac OS X stuff in the lower right corner is listed in grey, meaning...who knows what term? This is the first time in a while I have seen OS X and CUDA anywhere near each other, so maybe it's on the radar on some level. Raistmer has been in the lead on OpenCL and he is mainly working on Windows, so I don't know if Urs, who is listed here as porting new stuff to OS X, will focus on that. Based on this, it looks like at some point, we can expect to see some combination of CUDA/optimized v7/AVX on Mac. Though note here that Urs does not contribute to CUDA, so it's still hard to say exactly what is coming to Mac at what point, without inquiring in more detail over on the Lunatics forum.
