Wakened today to discover GPU fan working at full speed with inaccessible monitor.
Remote login shows that host was rebooted, BOINC manager can't connect to core client, CCC reports no ATi GPU installed, Intel embedded GPU manager software shows dialog box about monitor connection.

Then I power cycle PC there was sound of spark and smell of burning. PC was shutted down itself immediately after that.

After ATi GPU removal system booted OK with embedded video, but BOINC manager (6.10.58) still can't connect to core client. Looks like ATi drivers should be completely uninstalled...

Now I'm trying to open GPU's protective/cooling cover. Removed all similar screws, but cover still can't be opened while it can be shifted slightly in any direction.

Should I remove 4 screws that hold central chip probably too ?

EDIT: answer was yes

Strange, but there is no signs of shortcircuit on plate itself

Ony drops of oil on memory chips. Does it mean that cooling system is broken?

Wow, scary. ): I hope you're able to recover soon, and if the card is dead, that this won't impede your development work too much.

Sorry that I can't be of any help - I've never experienced anything like this before.

hmmmmm .. hard to say, but on this pictures looks like the mem-chips burnt; what you mean with "drops of OIL"? are there ripples on their surface or are they perfectly flat as should be?

I'm breaking a vow of silence to suggest that AMD/ATi fanboys throw in to get Raistmer a proper card for development ...

The help from Fermi users toward my acquisition of a GTX 480, along with testing help by the community, propelled developments there quite far ahead, to the point where there is a mountain of refinement ahead for the Cuda applications.

Let's see if the Red team can do it. :D

There are drops of some liquid on some of memory chips (it should be seen on pictures). This liquid looks like oil.

("oil" could be from old heatpaste)

.. seems to be neccessary, old one looks like dead.

(@ raistmer: what is widely underestimated (besides psus) with graphics card in overclocking are the memories and voltage regulators. with the sw-tools we are measuring gpu-chip temps only, which says nothing about the others. in many cases, the cooler doesn´t touch the mems and vregs, so they are solely depending on airflow. if they have no additional heatsinks, might die slowly with gpu even running in temp. specs.; so if cooler wasn´t attached to the mems, should be nothing (like "oil") there; chips are dying from inside out; so if, they would crunch - having no flat surface any more - and might evaporate also "liquids))

Since we have this opportunity, which card would help the most?

yeah .. let´s take this breakdown as a chance for improvement - as breakdowns in most cases are - and get the new card on it´s way quickly!

I agree! I always do the same thing. When something breaks I replace it with the best quality I can.

perfect idea .. just make sure - in case - that raistmer has enough space in the rig, since this card is one of the very "long" ones; and might consume much more power than the old one, since it´s a dual-gpu.

IMHO Raistmer should get equipped/sponsored by AMD/ATI with a variety of different hardware.

With his untiring efforts developing GPU apps he helped AMD/ATI to get a foot in the GPGPU market.

Anyone here with good connections to someone from AMD (marketing) ?
