We may have lost Pluto, but it looks like we might be getting Tyche. Scientists may soon be able to prove the existence of the gas giant, which could be four times the size of Jupiter, according to astrophysicists John Matese and Daniel Whitmire from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. The two first proposed Tyche's existence in order to explain a change in path of comets entering the solar system, according to The Independent. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/02/14/tyche-hidden-planet_n_823028.html |

Tyche, could be somewhat possible and a failed star, though it has to be proven first. Out that far from the Sun, until we send probes out that far to investigate it remains a mysterious place that could have a surprise in store for us. Assuming it exists it must not reflect very much light at all, very faint glow.Hmmmm...what if. |

We can see dwarf brown starts but not a gas giant that should be easily identifiable from its gravitational pull In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but his face. Diogenes Of Sinope |

An inferred mass of only 4 times that of Jupiter makes a brown dwarf an unlikely explanation. Its expected that these will have a minimum mass in the range of 10-13 times Jupiter's. |

See! Larry Niven's planet "Persephone" has been found at last. Soon we may find messages from a wandering "Pak Proctor". celttooth Does any one remember the "Ring World"? |

Whoops, I messed up. I ment "Pak Protector." Next week I learn to spell. celttooth |

If they find it, it will be nothing unexpected. It is so called Nibiru and some people have talked about it for years. "We have the right to know what really happened in Roswell in 1947" |

Ah, yes, this would be the Nibiru that zipped through the inner solar system in 1983, causing the Earth to reverse its rotation, right? The one that we were warned about via telepathic communication from Zeta Reticuli? The one that’s hiding behind the Sun until it takes another run at us in December 2012? Good thing I’m wearing my tinfoil hat … |

I wasn't saying it was a brown dwarf. I was stating that we can see brown dwarf stars in this galaxy. that being said I'd have thought a planet 4X larger than Jupiter would be a no brainer for astronomers. Just an opinion. Since we haven't seen this large a mass which should have been visible, We may just have a large collection of sub-Pluto sized objects. That is: assuming the calculations are correct about the gravitational evidence. |

skildude; I wasn't reacting to your remark about brown dwarfs. I had read an journalistic article that suggested that Tyche was a brown dwarf. The press has gotten the details about this object wrong repeatedly. One article said that Tyche was four times the size of Jupiter, even though no one has ever seen it*. Another said it was four times the density of Jupiter. That isn't known either. The mass of the object is inferred to be about four times that of Jupiter.---*Because of the gravitational compression of planets potentially larger than Jupiter, they would very probably quickly contract. It believed to be unlikely than any super-Jovian planet will be larger than about one and a half times the diameter of Jupiter. |

I agree abrown dwarf would have easily been noticed as an anomaly long ago. In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but his face. Diogenes Of Sinope |

If they find it, it will be nothing unexpected. It is so called Nibiru and some people have talked about it for years. Sure, If scientists said Nibiru does not exist, it should not exists. Scientists also said that rocks cannot fall from the sky...but they fall everyday - they are called meteorites. And there is no water on the Moon because Sagan said so, all the recent data from space probes orbiting the Earth's satellite is all wrong. If they find it, it will be nothing unexpected. It is so called Nibiru and some people have talked about it for years. So by your logic, we should just stop believing scientists because they're nearly or always "wrong", and start believing in rumors without data as fact because it's the best alternative. Science and scientists may be wrong, but we usually prove them wrong with repeatable and verifiable evidence and peer review. The beauty of science is that it's not absolute, we are open to learn and change things as new data becomes available. That is diametrically opposed to some fictional stories out there dictating all the answers and cannot be wrong, but seemingly cannot be proven right through proof or actual data. |

This business about a planet called Nibiru was started by the late mythologist Zecharia Sitchin. He interpreted ancient Mesopotamian myths to indicate many dubious astronomical ideas. He claimed that Niburu was a planet with a highly eccentric orbit that swept through the inner and outer solar system. He also claimed it was basically Earth-like and harbored a race of intelligent, humanoid extraterrestrials. How a planet with an orbit like this could support life wasn't explained, as far as I can discover, merely asserted. Such a planet would be abysmally cold for most of its 3600 year-long orbit of the Sun. In addition, Tyche is inferred to have a mass four times that of Jupiter. It would, not be even remotely like the planet Sitchin described. In all probability it would be a gas giant, much like Jupiter, mostly made of solid hydrogen under stupendous gravitational and atmospheric pressure. Michael |

I have read some of the books of Sitchin and actually I think most of his interpretations are wrong. That does not mean that the core idea is all wrong too. But instead of laughing at him, astronomers could check the ancient texts and try to come with others interpretations. "We have the right to know what really happened in Roswell in 1947" |

But instead of laughing at him, astronomers could check the ancient texts and try to come with others interpretations. Perhaps they already have, and found nothing meriting discussion or importance. Personally, I'd rather the scientists find their own data through discovery and observation rather than old texts that can be interpreted any way one wishes to stretch the story. |

Some scientists think the the asteroid belt is the remains of an ancient planet. ... Or of a planet that never coalesced. The tidal forces from Jupiter and Saturn help to keep the asteroid belt disturbed. Might Ceres and Vesta eventually mop up the remaining material to give us two new planets?... Might Ceres and Vesta eventually mop up the remaining material to give us two new planets?... Seems unlikely: they’ve had a few billion years to work on it but haven’t made the slightest ‘clump’ yet AFAICT. That’s the main reason they’re called “dwarf planets†in the current nomenclature … those who mourn Pluto’s relegation might do well to note that the first few asteroids to be discovered were called “planets†for several decades. |

Might Ceres and Vesta eventually mop up the remaining material to give us two new planets?... Indeed so. Note that the word 'planet' in its original meaning of old merely described an object as a "wanderer". That is, what was seen as planets were points of light that wandered across the fixed backdrop of stars. I agree, I suspect that the various gravitational resonances for our solar system will keep the asteroid belt forever disturbed.
