I would really be interested in a real study of the average health costs of a non-smoker and a smoker over the last 20 years of their lives. Seems smokers die sooner and even if they weren't smokers they would incur lots of other costs associated with old age...I just don't believe the statistics take everything into account. I have never seen projected costs taken out of the equation, it's almost as if non-smokers don't get old and need transplants and other hospital stays.
Seems being Politically correct is more important than actual facts. I know smoking is bad and should not be done but just honestly believe the Radicals have made way more out of things for fear than for truth. I still believe obesity costs way more....

If you can believe the recent blather in the news, smokers don't get to their last 20 years on average.

If I were God I would do this. All people who smoke cigarettes would get an ultimatum. You have 48 hours to stop smoking. If you do not stop, the next time you take a drag your head will explode, causing death I would imagine. After a few days and a few million deaths, I, God, would stop this(reanimate the exploded dead) and give people another 48 hours to comply. If you continue smoking after this second 48 hours the drag and explode will continue forever, and death would be permanent.

This would be a free service. GOD would pick up all costs.

iWorm 'em.

p.s.
My Dad and Mom smoked. The Kids all smoked, except for me. I never have. As my Mom and Dad were Cooochee, Coooochee, Cooooocheeing their little newborn tyke- as they were bending over the crib- blowing smoke into my fresh, pink face, and dropping ashes on my cute little covers(and on my chin), no doubt their thoughts were not on my health or theirs. Bless 'em.

I agree smoking is bad...I just feel the health care figures are way exagerated to get the SHEEPLE on board. As for second hand smoke...I would bet everything I own that some people would still get lung cancer even if they never saw a smoker...Funny with all the smog everywhere how every case of lung cancer is because of second hand smoke. I hear they have a pill that cures Lung Cancer.

Well.. My guess is that most smokers died an early death. However...

Now with the great advances in heart bypass surgery, I would guess that now there's too high a proportion of smokers expensively being given an even more expensive chance to linger longer...

More of a question is how the tobacco industry was able for so long to (criminally?) befuddle the medical issues?

Is that same trick now being done by the 'fast/processed food' industry?

Also by certain genetic-modified foods companies?

And by big oil and energy companies?...

the tobacco companies shelled out billions to the states to cover the cost of smokers on medicare and medicaid. Unfortunately, most states chose to cash in the long term dividend to supplement short term state gov't needs. once again gov't officials fail to look beyond the end of their noses

I speak as a non-smoker who is allergic to tobacco smoke. If you will die from smoking depends on the genes you have. I have seen smokers die young and my father lived almost to 80 before cancer got him. He had no other health problems and if it hadn't been for the cancer he could have lived for another 10 to 20 years. Is smoking going to kill you? Maybe. Is it a good idea to smoke? NO. Is it hard to quit once you start? YES. My dad tried to quit many time but was only able to quit in the last few months of his life after the doctor told him he was going to die.

I smoked for years, and years. My wife (Long Suffern' Marie) and I quit first try.
My wife is a wonderful person who I believe can do almost anything, but if I can quit smoking then I think just about anyone should be able to do so as well.
Like I said when I quit the Air Force (RCAF) "Well let's see who is still alive when we all hit 65 years old?”

you have rights, lets also not forget I have rights, too. I don't want to smell your smoke. I don't need to breath your smoke. So to protect my rights your feelings get a bit bruised. I'd prefer not to have emphysema, COPD, hardening of the arteries, strokes, and all the other maladies that come with smoking.

Lets put it this way. Cross dressers have their rights too. That doesnt mean I want to head to a Cabaret or a gay pride parade.

So you have to go outside to smoke or can't smoke where you want to do it. Oh well, its about common courtesy and not offending those around you

People complaining about the slightest whiff of cigarette smoke are being unrealistic. What about all the other shshshstuff you breathe every day and don't complain about?

I suspect it's that they are not willing to shut the electricity to their house off because of the coal powered plant supplying it or sell their car because it contributes to greenhouse gasses. That would require self sacrifice.
It's much more self-satisfying to tell another individual what they can or cannot do.

I am not supporting smoking. I have done it for almost 30 years, it is a bad thing, an expensive thing, and I do want to quit. I pray that one day soon God will help me find the inner strength to do so.

But it still raises my hackles when someone who does not smoke tells me that I CANNOT....

Who do polluters think they can pollute willy nilly all over the planet? Why do they think they can foul other people's property? Why do they think they can foul common property? Why do they think the stuff they pollute with is harmless?

Don't get me wrong I've gone to Bars where people were smoking up a storm just to see a local band that I like. Needless to say, the next day I felt like I'd had a hard night of drinking without actually doing any.

For general purposes though I avoid places that allow smoking
