My dad had a Corvair convertible when I was a kid. Peed oil all over the garage floor constantly. He never could get a mechanic to fix it. Time for a few more Cadillacs for the Seti garage. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

Googles's Failure Trends in a Large Disk Drive Population pdf is well worth rereading when thinking about drive replacements as PM.Joe Hello Josef, thanks, I found this article very interesting. Especially chapter "3.5.2 Reallocation Counts". Maybe implementing a procedure for drive replacements would be a nice start for a more general PM? cheers, Frizz |

Googles's Failure Trends in a Large Disk Drive Population pdf is well worth rereading when thinking about drive replacements as PM.Joe I don't know I've got a 7-8 year old 300GB Maxtor (yuck I know....) that has had SMART errors for reallocation events for the past 3 years and it hasn't failed, slowed down, or done anything funny. However I did just have 2 500's take a dive with SMART errors in reallocation sector counts. But it still falls back to Google's analysis saying that it's a decent indication but shouldn't be used as a failure analysis alone because most of their drives (referencing their 2007 paper) died without any SMART indications. Their current plan I believe is pretty valid, running a raid array is for the purpose of data integrity and the reason why they only lose time not data. As far as 'what' drives to replace with that would be where having extra on hand comes in and I think this has been covered ad nauseam in this post and others where Pappa said he was waiting on word of the impending parts list. So I think their strategy works, as some have already said this was never intended to be an on demand 24/7 service and why we have caches. As far as making it that way I believe it more a matter of paying for the costs of a staff 24/7 and parts more than replacing what could fail. Traveling through space at ~67,000mph! |

... and why we have caches. Unfortunately most of those caches are empty by now ;) |

... and why we have caches. Indeed including mine. However the plan was for you to crunch what 'they' have available. Nothing is available your job, as well as mine, for now is completed until more is ready. Ego and rights have no place in someone else's house. Patience is a thing practiced to perfection around here lol. Traveling through space at ~67,000mph! |

From what I've got, from various replies to this posting so far, is: - Patience, and trust in the forces that be, is all we need. - I agree with Frizz. - Frizz is a smartass (from tiny New Zealand ... where is that anyway?). - I have nothing to say, but I'll say it anyhow *g*. - ... For clarification: I started this thread in the hope that it could spark a discussion 1) on how to improve the project uptime. 2) if those people that put serious resources (time, hardware, electricity) would be willing to help improving S@H infrastructure (hardware, software, procedures, ...). If you are happy with the way things are, and all you want to do is crunch a unit every now and then, that's cool. Just ignore this thread. My intention was more to address those guys that see crunching S@H as a real serious hobby. Constructive criticism / input would be appreciated. Bloated egos not. Cheers, Frizz |

.. sorry to disturb (maybe again), but i want to confess, that i seem to be much too stupid to understand some things here .. and even more not able, to explain my thoughts. i cannot find a bridge between an organisation asking people to contribute (in different ways), and at the same moment tell them (or treat them in this way), that their (constructive) opinion (& contribution) is not so interesting. btw. seti is calculating in OUR houses, so the "rights" are with us. has nothing to do with ego as mentioned. i´m very sorry, if i did - without intention - bother, abuse or anything & anybody. out of myself - i give up to understand or accept, what is sometimes going on here. i love hubble! .. |

i cannot find a bridge between an organisation asking people to contribute (in different ways), and at the same moment tell them (or treat them in this way), that their (constructive) opinion (& contribution) is not so interesting. I have not seen one single person from the project tell anyone else here that any opinion is not "interesting". Remember that everyone here, except those with the Project Administrator tags, are just volunteers and they have a right to an opinion as well. btw. seti is calculating in OUR houses, so the "rights" are with us. has nothing to do with ego as mentioned. But you are calculating in YOUR house by choice. The RIGHT you have is to ensure that your hardware has something to do when SETI is down. You have the RIGHT to crunch another project or turn off your computer, or even get angry and detach. No one has the RIGHT to DEMAND the project fix things within a certain amount of time, or that they constantly give us updates until it is fixed. A single update letting us know they're working on it should be sufficient. |

Well... There has been more than enough frustration to go around these days. And some don't express it as gently as others. I don't care for the project being down any more than the next fellow. But I have experienced enough troubles with my own stable of rigs over the years that I know how these things go. Sometimes you need new parts, sometimes just sorting hardware issues out with what you've got can take forevvvvvvvvvvvvvvver. And sometimes you think you have the problem solved and it just flies back in your face. Start over. No different for the boyz in the lab. Sometimes it does seem like news is a bit long in coming, but it does not make sense to issue a news bulletin if there is nothing to report. Long story short, most complaints are from people who's heart is in the right place. They want to contribute their resources to the project and get unhappy when things are not working well. They do care about Seti. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

i cannot find a bridge between an organisation asking people to contribute (in different ways), and at the same moment tell them (or treat them in this way), that their (constructive) opinion (& contribution) is not so interesting. right! came to my mind too .. it is not "represented" .. in a way. btw. seti is calculating in OUR houses, so the "rights" are with us. has nothing to do with ego as mentioned. sure! .. again & forever .. i myself .. am not talking about "rights" or ego-trips. i´m also not behind crunching just to crunch .. or accumulate credits. my bill is my bill - no concern for anybody. free will, what i spend, do or leave alone. that´s the trivial part of it & not under discussion (4 ME). 4 me it finally looks like many of here (not you personally) are in a "different kind of thinking" - just about crunching & credits, loads - compared to me; they are "requesting" .. that´s NOT my interest; so it looks like i will never be able in this lifetime to explain, what i mean. i´m not in competition, but in collaboration. so parts of the discussion here - i felt - were not requests .. but OFFERS. if somebody asks you to contribute, you pay attention, and then it is not IMPORTANT or neglected .. sooner or later - you simply quit. your answer is again very much appreciated, and i send many thanx to you 4 your attention; i quit - for now. ;-) |

I see nothing wrong with this thread and Frizz's attempts at helping to fix the problem. I don't know that we'll ever get a clear picture of the situation so long as they have to keep us out of the loop for security reasons - and I don't blame them at all. I think it's wonderful that so many people want to offer advice, expertise, money, CPU time, etc. to this project. I offer as much expertise to fellow crunchers wherever and whenever I can. |
