Hi,

I have recently set up my good old trusty B&W G3 to churn away on S@H BOINC. Apparently the machine has already returned a few results.
but when I check on the S@H Results page all those returned units show up as Server State "In Progress", Outcome "Unknown".

In contrast, I just have set up my PC at work today, and there I can see Server State "Over", Outcome "Success".

Any idea what could be wrong with my setup (I am using SETI Control) or any suggestions in how to narrow down the problems I seem to have?

Cheers,

Dirk

Hi Dirk,

TTBOMK, "In Progress" means that your host currently has those work units and is working on results for them. When your host has done enough of them so that it is getting low on work units, it will send the computed results back to the SETI site, at which the Validator at SETI will mark the returned results as "Success".

Notice that "In Progress" is a Server state, while "Unknown" is an Outcome. That is the pair of labels that you included in your post. For your PC, you say that you have many "Success" and "Done" results, signifying that you PC and SETI were "success"ful in relaying to your computer and then back to the SETI server, and that they were "done" processing. More detail in the meaning of these and other terms is available at the top of the column in your "Results for host" page.

I too, have a trusty B&W chugging away on SETI-boinc. My B&W has a G4 clocked up to 500MHz and it takes it about 10 -13 hrs to finish a WU, so if it keeps 1.5 days worth of work on hand all the time, it might take 3 days or for a given WU to be downloaded, work its way through the queue (usually 4 or 5 WU's in it all the time*12hrs a piece = 48hrs), get processed (another 12 hrs) and then get beamed back up to the SETI server (total of 2.5 or 3 days).

Your PC may have a faster processor (like a Pentium 3GHz w/ hyperthreading), and it can probably do a WU in say 4hrs, so it may have already process and returned results.

These are just guesses. What are your actual processor speeds?

Hi davygravy,

Thanks for your extensive answer. My B&W is still clocked to his original speed - 350 MHZ and as far as I can judge it takes about a day to finish one WU. But this is just a vague figure at the moment as the machine is not running at all times yet.
And yes, I have my machine at work churning away as well. That's an Intel Xeon processor. I am not sure about the actual speed, but I think it's somewhere between 1.5 and 2 GHZ.

So your guesses were quite accurate :-). Thanks again for your very explanatory answer,

Dirk
