Message 1068299 - Posted: 19 Jan 2011, 18:18:55 UTC

Having not been active on SETI@home for some time I decided to install BOINC on my new laptop running windows 7.
I have downloaded and installed the software and also downloade some Einstein units (seti was down). The problem I have is that my laptop has several accounts on it including the Administer account, a standard account that I use on a day to day basis and a standard account that my wife uses. It seems that BOINC will run only under the admin account as I cannot access BOINC Manager from my standard account. Is there a preferences setting that will allow me to specify which users can access BOINC Manager and thus modify/add projects etc?

Cheers,

Keith

Since your computers are hidden, I can't tell if you are using a GPU. If not, you could install BOINC in Protected Application Execution (service) mode. Then BOINC would run even if nobody is logged in.

Either way, you'll have to uninstall BOINC (that won't delete your data) and then reinstall again, using the advanced mode (3rd screen?) to select "allow all users" (and eventually PAE mode). See also here for some screen shots.

Gruß,
Gundolf

Click on Start -> Control Panel -> User Accounts -> User Accounts (note: this is not a duplicate) -> Manage User Accounts (entering the Admin credentials if prompted).

This should bring up the User Accounts window. Click on the Advanced tab, then under "Advanced User Management" click on the Advanced button. You should see a window with to groups on the left called Users and Groups. Click on Groups, then find the BOINC_Admin group. Right click on BOINC_Admins and select "Add to group...". This window will show you all users that have Administrative rights to the BOINC sandbox group on your local machine. By default your machine's Administrator account should be listed.

Click on the "Add..." button to bring up a "Select Users, Computers, Service Accounts, or Groups" window. Enter in the names of the accounts you'd like to add under the box "Enter the object names to select:", separating each name by a semi-colon. When done, click on "OK" to close the window, and exit out of the rest of the open windows.

Now each user should have full access to control BOINC from their user accounts.

Only if you give them Administrative rights.

Hi,

I just want to ask, about multiple users. Do the other users have the privilege to uninstall any program you have installed?

$o |>0/|/3,

But they said they make way on registry. I'm not a computer geek but I think you can navigate softwares and other stuff in registry entry. Correct me if I'm wrong.

People without Administrative privileges cannot make changes to most parts of the registry. They can only make changes to HKLM\Current User, which only affects the currently logged in user's local settings such as their Desktop (gadgets, taskbar preferences, etc.)

Also, people without Administrative privileges cannot even launch RegEdit to make changes to the registry.
