The OP is probably a Linux user trying to put one over on Windows users. No, this: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=62513 A little levity is a good thing. :) "Life is a tragedy for those who feel, and a comedy for those who think." Hmmm, so is it worth running seti@home? Since it must reduce your computers lifespan and we will probably never find alien signals from this... |

The odds are certainly against us, but many, as I, have been at this for 10 years or more. And believe enough in it to continue. Is it worth it? Only you can decide that. To me it has been.... Hmmm, so is it worth running seti@home? Since it must reduce your computers lifespan and we will probably never find alien signals from this... This is a Value Judgement that each person has to decide. If we look at the numbers of Seti Users or even Boinc Users that have given up on any project, it would appear that there comes a point when you have to decide. I/we can not tell what to do. Myself I ahve been searching for ET for over 11 years now. I have many computers that have been retired. To the best of my knowledge, Seti has never destroyed a computer. That does not say that my computers do not have issues, it does say that the issues that I have experienced fall in the range of probablity. Meaning the longer you run any computer the more likely it is to fail. I will continue to run Seti. As for running Seti installed on a friends or families computer, you do have to have permission and arm them with enough knowledge to restart or Set No New Tasks until you can get there. YOu should also setup a Venue for the account that you are using to "suspend processing" while they are using the computer. They then have full use of the machine. I would also recommend that you attach to Seti using your Weak Account Key. This prevents them from accidently logging into your account and breaking something. So the best thing to do would tell them about the icon in the task bar that is Boinc, when you right click on it it shows a menu. One thing that is in the menu is Exit which would stop boinc. If you log out and then log back in Boinc will restart. Keep it simple. Regards Please consider a Donation to the Seti Project. |

Heck most computer components are meant to last 10 years. Most computer parts are obsolete within 5 years so even if you burn out a computer in 5 years its still made it to its point of obsolescence In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but his face. Diogenes Of Sinope |

My old P4 has been chugging away since 2004 24/7 It will die oneday. But if your relatives and pals have the newest super GPU cards for playing the baddest games in town and you install Seti and lunatics and they dont know, Well how would you feel if you smoked the card? How would you feel if the machine got so hot and caught fire? Dont think it cant happen. To me Seti is worth it but that is my choice going in with my eyes wide open. [/quote] Old James |

What would we do if we found an alien signal anyway...we'll know we're not alone but thats all, no more contact could be made after the signal. Plus we wouldnt be able to be 100% certain that its an alien signal. Perhaps peoples processing power should be used on the BOINC programs that are trying to save lives rather than hoping for a billion to one shot of finding aliens. |

Plus we wouldnt be able to be 100% certain that its an alien signal. Again, your choice. If that's what you believe in, do it. I prefer the billion in one shot, because I believe the impact upon humanity would be far greater than curing our ills. But your goals are commendable too. Do what your soul tells you to. You won't be wrong either way. Meow. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

What would we do if we found an alien signal anyway...we'll know we're not alone but thats all, no more contact could be made after the signal. Plus we wouldnt be able to be 100% certain that its an alien signal. Why could no more contact be made after we find the signal? Wouldn't that profoundly change our views and make us work harder to find ways to connect with them? Perhaps peoples processing power should be used on the BOINC programs that are trying to save lives rather than hoping for a billion to one shot of finding aliens. Let's assume we do this. We put forth our processing power to come up with some amazing cures for AIDS or even the common cold. These solutions need to be manufactured and mass-produced, costing money. The drug companies would have to be the ones coming up with the manufacturing and production monies. Since the drug companies would not be producing and manufacturing a cure for something without my processing time having helped, does that mean I get a discount should I need the cure? Or do I pay full price even though it may not have been possible without my help? Do I get to feel all warm and fuzzy inside because I helped find a cure that I may not be able to afford one day, or even my grandchildren may not even be able to afford? More dramatically, if the world were to end tomorrow, wouldn't it make all efforts for naught? Where do we draw the line on what's important vs what's unimportant? These are personal questions that only each individual can decide. Just some things to think about. Personally, I spread my CPU time over a few projects that I feel are worth it instead of investing them all in one effort. Currently, the primary recipient of the bulk of my processing power is going to Rosetta@Home because I wish to help find cures to protein-related diseases. That doesn't mean I don't want to make contact with an intelligent civilization, or think that the efforts are a waste. |

If we recieved an Alien signal wont they be long dead by the time we recieved it?? Even if Seti found any signal I doubt the Governments of the world wouldnt want the pubic finding out, it would throw the world into chaos and bring down religion...Well I hope it does bring down religion. |

If we recieved an Alien signal wont they be long dead by the time we recieved it?? They might well be.......but even the proof of their (ex) existence would rock the world. And I have said this before...... My belief in God does not preclude my belief that, if He created us, He could have created others not mentioned in our earthly documents. He could have created other worlds as beautiful as ours..... Watch 'Avatar'..................................................... God made us all........ Your search for life in other places does not need to supplant your belief that God put us here. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

If we recieved an Alien signal wont they be long dead by the time we recieved it?? That would depend on the survivability of the race. All things being possible, I would say that it's still worth a shot. Even if Seti found any signal I doubt the Governments of the world would want the pubic from finding out, it would throw the world into chaos and bring down religion...Well I hope it does bring down religion. I've never been able to buy into the conspiracy theory stuff. The Governments can barely keep their houses in order, let alone keep big secrets. There is that old saying, "You might be able to fool some of the people some of the time, but you can never fool all of the people all of the time". Too many people seek truth and answers for stuff to stay hidden for long. |

Too many people seek truth and answers for stuff to stay hidden for long. You for real? The truth about JFK is still hidden..... Nooooooooo. Most are dead now that held the truth. Probably hidden in the book depository. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

Too many people seek truth and answers for stuff to stay hidden for long. 100% and not from concentrate. How long did it take before we found out exactly what happened at Watergate? 20-25 years? The truth always comes out in the end. Let's not hijack this thread with politics and conspiracies though. |

Yes this needs to be discussed elsewhere. Not in Number Crunching. Preferably where I can't see it. |
