I would like to point out that installing software on a computer without the owner's permission is illegal in some jurisdictions. I agree with you but there is also the fact that seti is already hidden. C:\programdata\boinc There are also at least 11,100.000 resutls to the question (how do I hide pc software?) on internet explorer. Michael

I certainly would not condone installing it on anybody else's computer without permission and 'hiding' it just so they didn't know it was there. I was just leaving open the possibility that there might be a valid reason for wanting to have Boinc inaccessible, especially on a computer you don't have access to all the time and is used by others. ’Zackly my point as well. Why is everyone so ready to assume the worst motives?

Can you think of any good motives?

I think this is turning into a game of who-dares ;). We are only trying to save the orig-poster's bacon. + yes the motives may be perfectly legitimate + calm. But I guess we're just playing safe.

Been my experience that 90% of the time assuming the worst is the right assumption.

Just friend and family computers...but don't want them to see it incase they uninstall it. Most arent computer savvy If they can use a PC, I think they are smart enough to understand what BOINC is (if you explained it). So they will not uninstall the software, if they want to run this software. E.g. my Intel Core2 Duo E7600 use ~ 50 W @ idle, ~ 110 W at full load SETI@home (calculation without GTX260, if with then + ~ 45 W @ idle and + ~ 140 W @ full load). Idle vs. full load, maybe they will be surprised about the higher electricity bill? Play with open cards and your friendships will lasts longer.. ;-) ____________ >Das Deutsche Cafe. Why is everyone so ready to assume the worst motives? I gave an example upthread: to cater to non-savvy users who like the idea of contributing to the project but are afraid the software will require some form of interaction they don’t feel competent to deal with. I’ve met plenty of people who get nervous at the very thought of a change in their computing environment: either experience—usually with Windows ;) —or imagination tells them that the appearance of anything out of the ordinary on their screen means trouble.

Then some education is in order for those users. If you install software that they know about but can't do anything about, the first time their computer hiccups they will blame the Seti software and the installer for messin' up their computer.

Then some education is in order for those users. If you install software that they know about but can't do anything about, the first time their computer hiccups they will blame the Seti software and the installer for messin' up their computer. +1 Also, it is only fair to continue the education by saying it is impossible to "install SETI", just like that, on its own.It will require BOINC as well, plus connection to an account here at SETI - the creation of an account, if one doesn't exist already. And when all that is done, there is a real cost for the end user. The extra electricity consumed, and the extra network traffic on their internet connection. It isn't fair to impose all that on them without explanation and education.

There was another guy besides NEZ that hijacked peoples machines typically as a trojan. Wate was his id, and was lucky to get away with only having all his credits deleted.
