Finally got around to cleaning the new computer after 12 months. The fans were getting really loud.

Now it is 8F degrees cooler inside and a LOT less noisy.

Don't think I will wait that long to clean the next time.

Thats a weekly ritual for my filters here, monthly for the major parts inside the case and a complete tear down clean and re-seat once a year. A bit OCD but it's part of my hobby what can I say?

My case has pretty decent filters on the front of it. I just pop them out and hot water rinse them in the reverse direction of normal airflow. Let them dry, and pop them back in. 6-12 months between hauling the rig outside and hitting it with the air compressor. No noticeable temp decrease when doing that. The filters catch the dust bunnies, and all that makes it through to the inside is the fine powder type of dust.

Only 8F?

I cleaned out my i3 this afternoon. Prior to cleaning, CPU ran at 64C, GPU at 70C.
After cleaning, CPU runs at 44C, GPU at 55C. At least in Celsius it does make a difference. :)

I work for a hotel company, and I go to many of the hotels and do various maintenance on their computers. I'm not surprised, but i've seen much worst. for instance, i saw a mouse who made a home in a workstation once. probably didn't do a lot for the airflow in that box!

Holy crap a mouse living in it lol. I thought working on computers inside of factories where bad! Never found any rats nests or anything but have found quite a few total clogged up machines you would think were rats nests!

Just wait until they piss on the boards. It can really screw them up big time, though it may take a while for it to happen.

The worst I have seen was a small telephone system, the main control unit (6 lines and 16 extns) had been on a wall in the back of a chip shop, the fat was oozing out of the bottom of it.

It cleaned up like new, I stripped it down, soaked it in a strong dishwashing solution and scrubbed it with a soft toothbrush, the main control board was then placed in a warm place for 48 Hrs to dry before being fired up, it worked perfectly.

Most printed circuit boards can survive being wetted if it is done when they are powered down and are dried properly before being powered up.
