I started a new thread so as not to hijack the Understanding US Politics thread.

Morales represents everything the elites fear. He has socialized many industries that were once cash cows for a privileged few and he has taken the profits from these industries and put them to work for the people.

This first link is Noam Chomsky speaking about Bolivia:

Here is an interview with Evo Morales broadcast on Jazeera:
Part 1... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOdPP1ruHdk

Part 2... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zibjQzJizU&feature=channel

The man is quite sincere in his goals for his country. The US portrays him as some sort of radical communist thug because he threatens the economic development model featured as the centerpiece of US foreign aid.

Hugo Chavez may be somewhat more blustering than Morales but he too has threatened the US model for economic development by socializing industries.

There is a greater good and the needs of the people outweigh the wants of the elites.

Once again, Robert, as I said in the other thread...

Your list of '3 Successful Socialists in South America', namely

Kirchner, Morales, and Chavez

falls flat on its face. All three are corrupt. Corruption is wrong. When Corruption enters politics, it is Evil. The ends do not EVER justify the means.

I do not care what ideological stripes a politician wears, nor do I care which nation that person is a politician in. It does not matter what good they might have accomplished before. The moment a politician commits even one small corrupt act, they deserve to spend the rest of their days in prison, at least.

Now, ineptitude is forgivable. Just vote them out. Idiocy is forgivable, just vote them out. But corruption? Nope, lock them up, permanently.

This is for politicians at all levels, but when the politician is a head-of-state such as a president, they must avoid even the APPEARANCE of corruption, lest the people lose confidence in them.

Find me one socialist president (or equivalent) in South America that has not even the appearance of corruption, and we can talk.

When a Government controls all sources of revenues to run the Government(in essense The Country) instead of revenues coming from Taxation(as in The Good 'ole USA) The People have no say so, at all. All voices in opposition or just plain 'ole complaints are surpressed because The People are paid to keep their mouths shut with The Socialization of Goods and Services.

Now, if you want a Country with Healthy, Happy Zombies, then this might be the way to go. Looking the other way is the order of the day, while The Elite(The Government) parties hardy.

Socialism(For The People-LOL) is looking better all the time.

iWorm 'em.

First of all, Socialism is an economic system, not a political one. It implies in effect a compromise between capitalism and communism.

This could depending on view allow Canada, England, France, and many other nations to be considered by some as "socialist", even though their political systems are certainly democratic.

As far as presidents that do not even have the appearance of corruption, the last one in the USA I can think of was Jimmy Carter, although he definately had stress cracks by the time he left office.

I know that socialism (like capitalism and communism) are economic systems. However, socialism does require active involvement of the political system, as does communism and even capitalism (though to a much lesser extent on capitalism).

Even the USA could be put on that list, at least on the level of 'partial'. Even the old Soviet Union (USSR) could be said to have democratic institutions as well. The institutions were there, but the people weren't given a meaningful choice.

I agree with your statements about Jimmy Carter.

It looks like Robert's hero Chavez has been at it again. First he removed term limits on the Venezuelan Presidency. Now he has assumed dictatorial powers (ie. rule-by-decree). Second, he has devalued the Venezuelan currency, a move sure to raise prices (esp. food prices) on the Venezuelan poor, for the 2nd time in 12 months.

What sort of corrupt nonsense is Chavez up to?

Don't blame me, I voted for Johnson(L) in 2016.

Truth is dangerous... especially when it challenges those in power.
