Message 1062387 - Posted: 1 Jan 2011, 15:22:41 UTC

Has SETI been experiencing difficulties why I keep getting "Communications Deferred" and my settings summary in the messages window keeps showing the old values rather than the newly entered ones?

Nope, no connectivity issues here lately.

One of your hosts (5722578) has had server contact five minutes after your post. The other one on 28 Dec 2010 9:12:29 UTC.

What is the reason for the deferral? Copy&paste a few lines from your Messages tab here (around a connection attempt).

Gruß,

Hi Gundolf
thanks for your prompt response. I see now in the messages that there was indeed interaction despite the message to the contrary in the Boinc Manager when I pressed "Update".

I have somehting else though, which is that processing was going great with the Boinc sc.saver growing graphics earlier today. When I checked the screen a moment ago I found only some static stars on a black background. Just changed number of stars and speed to 0 as a trial.

You have enough work to satisfy the scheduler, or all CPUs are busy with high priority tasks, and there is no work to report

1/1/2011 5:01:09 PM Suspending computation - CPU usage is too high
There is a new setting whose default value is 25%. BOINC will stop processing if your CPU usage exceeds this amount. Set it to 0 (off) or 100.

1/1/2011 5:05:39 PM Suspending computation - CPU usage is too high
1/1/2011 5:05:59 PM Resuming computation
1/1/2011 6:31:07 PM Suspending computation - user is active
There is a setting to stop processing if you are using the keyboard or mouse. Most computers will have no problem computing and responding to keyboard and mouse. Typically insufficient RAM is the cause of problems.

You have lots of RAM for SETI (and most other projects.

1/1/2011 6:47:19 PM max memory usage when idle: 287.77MB
Even with this amount of RAM you have enough for SETI and many other projects.

1/1/2011 6:47:19 PM don't compute while active

1/1/2011 6:47:19 PM suspend work if non-BOINC CPU load exceeds 30 %
Change this setting to allow BOINC to process if other tasks take more than X% of CPU time

Message 1062997 - Posted: 3 Jan 2011, 9:13:19 UTC - in response to Message 1062580.

Hi John,
Thanks you very much for your elaborate response. I have followed the instructions as you indicated. The Boinc growing graphics screen saver still does not display. After the time for the screen saver to activate passes I just got a blank screen. After the last changes were made (including screen saver changes) when the screen saver kicked in I got a blank screen with a green bar at the top.

Also not sure where you change the parameter for "PM suspend work if non-BOINC CPU load exceeds 30 %" as I do not see that value anywhere in my settings.

Finally I recently got the following error messages at the top of the Edit Computing Preferences screen.

"Notice: Undefined variable: prefs in /disks/ptolemy/c/home/boincadm/projects/sah/html/inc/prefs_util.inc on line 172"
and
"Notice: Trying to get property of non-object in /disks/ptolemy/c/home/boincadm/projects/sah/html/inc/prefs_util.inc on line 172"

I saw that the value for "Disk: Use at most" in GB as well as % was empty, so I filled in a value for the % parameter.

The one of your hosts (5722578) I mentioned in my other post has now completed a task (it's currently waiting for validation). The other one (4923458) still has no tasks downloaded, though it has had contact with the server on 3 Jan 2011 10:20:19 UTC.

Please reboot this host (the pentium 4 with 1.50GHz) and then post the contents of the Messages tab here, preferably including an update attempt (click the Update button in the Projects tab).

Gruß,
Gundolf
