This is going to be Apples and Oranges

First Thank You, once Again Todd and GPU Users Group. You have shown that a small team can make a Large Difference. If Teams think this is a good idea, we can discuss how you might help to accomplish that (publicly or privately).

Second. While it very nice that you want to bump the RAM for Synergy. WE/You have to be cautious. I see donations coming in to accomplish that, and would like to remind you that the Seti Staff does not have the purchasing connections/power of many Seti IT Professionals. So when a certain amount is reached, it would be up to Todd/Others to see if he could get a purchase order generated that could be faxed to the Seti Staff.

As was cautioned about mixing and matching RAM. On one of my jobs I was handed a box of "used" 24 x 4Gig sticks, 72 x 2Gig sticks of Server RAM and a list of the first servers to Max out (we also discussed what would be the best amount for each machine as to its function). The Boss is not stupid and said to insure that things work properly (this meant taking production machines offline for the memory upgrades).
Normally the first test is pull and replace, then see if it fails to POST. I have a bootable CD which has memory diagnostics. Run RAM diagnostics. This was conducted on a server that I could hold offline for extended periods when I started to "match sets according to the amount of RAM destined for a specific machine." Of the First run through, I found 12 sticks that were questionable. NO hard failures, but they just did not want to play with some of the other sticks. The short story was that 10billable hours was spent playing and swapping RAM. When the questionable sticks were set aside and the groups that worked well together for each server were defined, the RAM Swaps went quickly and had no issues." Which was a result of proper prepartion and testing.

Thanks Pappa for your input!
Really I was hoping that as a team effort groups could come together with a trusted member taking the helm of any donation efforts that might be isolated by the S@H staff.

Not saying that indivduals shouldn't be encouraged to donate to S@H in anyway - but more co-ordinated efforts sometimes lead to more team spirit and enthusiam within the team ranks.

Granted our team (GPU Users Group) being a small and very dedicated has made it much easier to accomplish the goal of providing the overall membership of S@H a complete server. But I don't see why a larger team couldn't do this type of activity just like we have done if someone steps up to the plate to lead the effort.

We would encourage other groups of any size to band together to help meet the needs of this project now and going forward into the future.

Under no circumstance would I recommend deviating from the type of modules that are already installed in the new server. And Pappa is correct, proper testing must be done to ensure the proper operation of any new modules that might be installed given the nature of their intended purpose for 24/7 operation. After I received the memory for our new server it was tested for 4 days straight while I was out of town for Christmas - typically it doesn't need to be that long but upon my return it was nice to see it all worked properly.

Memory errors can lead to operating system instability and RAID/Disk corruption that could have far reaching negative effects on the project. Hence the reason that true servers employ ECC/Registered - memory pairing and sparing technologies to keep them running properly without problems.

If donations do come in with the ear mark of additional memory for the server that the GPU Users have provided they will have to be properly purchased through the channels in place at the University. It doesn't matter where they come from if they are the same modules.

Please lets not get off on a tangent that was never intended by my posting a challenge to the other teams to address the needs of the project for all of our benefits and to make this a stronger project that can be a true example of high performance distributed computing.

Warmest regards for the new year ahead to all!

All,

Best price would seem to be: http://www.compuvest.com/Desc.jsp?iid=1486785. $349.06 for 16GB or 48GB would be $1047.18.

Is the buy still open or has this order already been filled?

Take care and have a good day.

Rich et al

Matt has stated that the "synergy" is due to arrive Friday the 8th 2011

Currently:
MarkJ $370
ChuckEdmondson $200
Total $570

Have donated $570 towards additional RAM.

Looking At Matt's Tech news Posts, more drive spindles on the Master Science Server might take precedence. This was one reason that Matt wanted to let the new servers settle in before looking at the hardware.

All Said, if you want to donate towards Hardware, please insure that the donation is marked as a Donation for Hardware.

Pappa, I have a hunch if the Lab wanted to order it through Todd's business, he might give them a discount. I think he has gone above and beyond with the parts and time he has invested in the system, but I bet he would not make you pay full retail ;)

You sure that's 2011? As in the rest of the world, Friday is the 7th of January. ;-)

You are correct, the 8th is my 11 years at Seti.

Outstanding to see there are old school users around here. I guess I do qualify for this myself at 10.5 years.

I hope you used extremely strong packing tape and wrapped everything in many extra layers of bubble wrap so the boys can have a lot of fun fighting to get to the new toy! :-) There goes the rest of the work day there in Berkeley!

Well, our server Synergy is now up and running.
Hope we all can make use of it and further stabilize the infrastructure further!

Thank you Todd for your time and effort.

Kind regards Vyper

Really thanks to everyone that made this possible! Without the support of the team it never would have happened.

Excellent job all the way around!

Glad to see this all came together whilst the kitties were on vacation.
Including the bonus round for the extra RAM!!!

Way to go, everybody involved.
Many paws up from the kitties!

Hey,

Here's a thought.

Maybe we can add virtual real-time tours for their click value or however Google and the rest of the Internet makes money. I wouldn't mind checking in every once in a while (say holidays) even if it cost me a $1 to see. How about SETI/LED Christmas doing Silent Night - Mannheim Steam Roller? For me building the controller would be half the fun of making this happen.

For off holidays you could tie it to the heartbeat and see the status of the machines in lights.

Just a thought, for 2 cents.
