What would be amazing, and I throw the challenge out to individuals and the other teams, would be to donate enough cash to double the ram on 'Synergy'. Todd, if you would like to post the specs somewhere, I would like to see pledges to bring the ram up to the same amount as Oscar and Carolyn.

Then we would have 3 servers of almost identical specifications, and able to balance the workload between them, with support from the older servers.

'Synergy' currently has 48Gig of ram. Can we get it doubled up?

Not sure what they used, how much was paid, or the size of the sticks and speed. But I purchased 24GB of DDr3 1066 about a month ago and paid over $600 for ECC register memory. Higher end memory from a major manufacturer like crucial or kingston can run as high as $370 per 8GB. It would also depend on the number of memory slots they have in the server. The ram I bought was 3x8GB, but the motherboard has 12 slots.

If he has the same type of setup in that server then you would be looking at a number between $1200 - $4000 depending on if it's DDr3 1066, what brand, and if the server actually has room for it.

i would estimate we are looking at the lower to mid range of your estimate - depending when we buy and what discount can be negotiated :)

Yep as its got 2 cpu's it has 12 ram slots and 6 are awaiting some ram :)

so Kingston ram it is then as we will need to match the ram to avoid any problems with differences

Yeah short supply in deed, and he put the kingston bits in there those are some of the more expensive ones. Without negotiating prices you are looking at about $370 per 8GB (1 stick). If he only went with 6 sticks that means he is using the 8GB sticks.

$370 x 6 = $2220 before shipping and any tax incurred. With the right supplier and buying you may be able to haggle down to ~$2000. Ouch servers are so expensive. Glad I only build those parts for customers or I'd be in trouble. (Hence my home servers are built from mainstream parts!)

But the ask was for other teams and individuals to earmark a small donation towards upgrading the ram.

We just managed to purchase two full blown servers, and our group put the third one together from donations from just 13 people! It is all brand new kit, assembled and tested by Todd, who does this for a living, and currently has just boxed it for shipping to Berkeley!

I won't divulge what was donated by the group without discussion with them, but I don't think the ram cost was anywhere as high as you are suggesting. I could be wrong, but I don't think so...

The challenge was for others to extend what we have done, and make it at least as powerful as Oscar and Carolyn.

I didn't think it was unreasonable to ask if people were willing to donate a little bit more. It's for their benefit too, in the security of hopefully keeping work flowing throughout the New Year and beyond.

Although my name isn't on the server list of donations for Carolyn and Oscar, I made a donation earmarked for that, and put some in for the GPU Groups server donation. After raising what, $30k for 2 new servers, and our donation which will be there soon (because it got to the point where it was essential to have it done!) I was hoping many users could make small donations in the New Year to upgrade Synergy's ram.

At the end of January, funds permitting, I will make another donation, either for the ram drive if that goes ahead, or for general use if it doesn't go ahead or has been completed.

We have crunchers, but they aren't any good without any servers working to supply them with work.

It's the same old argument. If 50,000 users put in $10 each, Seti could run for a whole year without worrying. The consensus of the majority seems to be 'My small donation won't make a difference, so I won't even bother.'

But 'THANK YOU' to all that have donated. You are all stars, whether you display them or not!

When exactly did you get that I was saying it was a lot of money or not worth the donation.....what you just said is what I was trying to get across. From one person it's a lot from a lot of people it's small. Christ can't say anything in these forums without people taking it wrong.

Either way ram prices vary from reseller to reseller and from which distributor you buy from. So he may well have not paid that much for it. From the prices I'm looking at on newegg it's $376.69 for 8GB sticks. They only have 1 set of Kingston there that match the description. From CDW it's $449.99 per 8GB. They also have a 48GB kit for $2,326.99, but it's a 3x16GB which wouldn't match up. But I guess I'm spewing without knowing. Of course these are none haggle prices from distributor straight to business, without calling and telling them what it's for to hopefully cut a bit better deal.

I also think my price range isn't too far off from what's out there. You can always pay more or pay less depending on the timing and situation especially when you are talking about high density ECC ram, this isn't desktop ram so those prices need not apply. That is unless he didn't use ECC ram in it, which is also a possibility. The price nearly half when you get away from true server stuff.

How do i know? I was one of the thirteen who contributed and actually a fourteenth member has pledged a donation yesterday towards the RAM but i will let them post here when they get a chance.

Can we keep the speculation on prices to a minimum, please, as we do not want to kill this thread with discussion which is moot until we have a consensus that people want to do this, have a few donations and in say late Jan decide if we have enough for 48gig of ram or something else or both :)

That's what I was saying? Trust me I know I do this for a living as well. Me buying from my personal account versus buying from my business account makes a HUGE difference in prices at times. Especially when buying in bulk.

The modules that I used in the server are 8GB each and they were purchased in a kit of 2 modules. Obviously we aquired three kits to arrive at the 48GB level.

I don't recall off the top of my head what the cost of these kits were at the time but memory prices are highly volatile with the conflict level going on in Korea. This is causing trade issues across the globe. And in addition the Christmas buying season causes the focus of manufacturers to head to consumer products and not so much to the server market.

The server does have 6 more slots available to be populated with the same modules - I wouldn't recommend using a different type or manufacturer even if they have the same speed/performance ratings. These are the Intel validated modules so there is no question that they will work properly.

Pricing is different for the method of purchase - obviously I don't pay retail prices based on my buying strength through my distributors. Although sometimes Newegg does have better pricing on some components - CPU's and hard drives are a good example. But for my business I need to purchase through authorized channels to maintain my perks from the manufacturers. There is no way to track purchases through Newegg.

Listed below is the kits that were purchased so that we can maintain the same type in the event that money is raised to purchase more. It would be typical to see these kits go for $1200 - $1500 for three based on availability.
