Message 1060644 - Posted: 28 Dec 2010, 22:08:14 UTC - in response to Message 1060618.

Good day,
Thought it best that I chime in since I am involved with the GPU Users Group server donation. I am pleased to announce that the RAM that was backordered for the server has been delivered, installed and certified to run a 24/7 duty.

Server RAM has been a significant challenge to get for the past 2 months and has caused headaches for many of us that build servers often - my company normally builds about 4-5 highend servers per week. Larger capacity modules (8 & 16GB) have been in very short supply throughout the world and delayed the donation.

These are the server specifications:
Intel SR2600UR Barebones Server
Intel SAS RAID Card with 8 Ports (SAS6/SATA6)
5 Seagate Constellation 1TB 6Gb/SAS Hard Drives 7200 RPM
48GB of Kingston DDR3-1066 Reg & ECC RAM (6-8GB Sticks)
Intel Slim-Line DVD-ROM Drive
Intel E5649 2.53Ghz Hex-Core CPU's (X2)
750 watt Dual Redundant Power Supplies
Front Panel Bezel to make it look pretty

Over the holiday I had the RAM testing (and the whole system for that matter) running Prime95 at 100% duty for a total of 4.5 days without any failures, lockups or other issues. I also ran the Intel Hardware Confidence Test for a total of 1 week with no issue so I am pleased to put the wraps on the box and ship it out to California in the coming days.

I would like to point out that the GPU Users Group, a very small group of dedicated crunchers has made this donation possible and was not simply a singular donation.

You can look for the new server to be called "Synergy" in the near future in the server status page.

Warm regards, Todd - Team GPU Users Group Admin and World RAC Leader
Happy New Year!

Thanks Todd AND the GPU Users Group for this great donation. This may Help us Keep OUR Dream Alive.

Jim Scott

Kinda confused... Did this group donate a server and memory or is it all TBD (to be delivered)????

Having worked on donations of hardware previously I read through the posts and got the impression a respectable server was in process of being assembled but not yet delivered?

Or did I miss something?

Just looking to get this clear...

It is a complete server that is being donated. Todd organized the whole thing and with donations from various members of the GPU Users Group, purchased, assembled and tested it. Todd was just waiting on the memory to come off backorder before it could be 100% completed and packaged for shipment. This is separate from the 2 servers that were funded by the general SETI userbase (Oscar & Carolyn)

The GPU users group with Todd doing the assembly/testing has a server for donation. It was discussed with the labs before hand, and within financial limits of what we could put together, has been tested and is ready to ship to the SETI labs as soon as they are ready to start working with it.

So you are correct, it has not been delivered yet.

But we look forward to "Synergy" helping out soon.

And it shall be interesting to see what it's capabilities are and what tasks it will be assigned. Should be a very nice addition to the closet.

I think that 3 new servers heralds a new dawn for the Seti project. For far too long the guys have had to make do with second hand kit, and other cobbled together stuff. But I am being pragmatic, and not expecting everything to be going full blast until the end of January. But when it does, it all should sure be motoring!

Aye, cap'n....
Did I hear you say warp 9?

Today, within the limitations of time, I hope to put the final wraps on the server and prep it for drop off at FedEx. The weight of the server is close to the limit that UPS has at 70lbs per package so I elected to ship with a better carrier.

It does cost more but in my opinion FedEx is a better option as they seem to take much better care of the packages under their watchful stare. UPS has damaged so much of my stuff that it gives me the chills just thinking about sending our fine server through their myriad of trucks and processing centers.

If you ever saw what happens inside a UPS sort facility, you'd never ship by them - but I imagine that the same sorts of things happen at a FedEx sort...

Where I once worked we had a UPS test. Took three guys out on the floor and had them stand about fifteen feet apart in a triangle. Took a test item and tossed it so it landed a on the floor a couple of feet short of the next guy. Round and round about fifty times. If when we opened the test item if it was undamaged, then the packing was good for UPS.

The company I retired from once received a package via UPS, crushed. The driver admitted to us that it got run over by a truck. They never did reimburse us for the circuit board inside.

Can somebody tweak the SQL database so we can get a Stats export today please?
It's not too many computers, it's a lack of circuit breakers for this room. But we can fix it :)
