Wonderful :). Sometimes suspending things can be a problem - it's also easy to miss things, especially when you've got a big cached. Always check by resorting the list :).

Make sure 'Use NVIDIA GPU Enforced by version 6.10+' is set to 'yes' in your SETI@home preferences

Claggy

I did , It is :)

Thanks!

One other thing to check is if you have set up local preferences that may be overriding the Web-based preferences. I've been tripped up by that one more than once...

You can't set Project preferences in Boinc Manager, so they can't be over-riden,

Whoops, you're right. Pardon me while I extract foot from mouth...

Well, I seem to now be averaging differently, depending on how I calculate it. Running all custom Lunatics stuff.

6 CPU and tasks
2 GTX 460 tasks (1 GPU)

-- Eyeballing the user average tab, looks to be around 11,700 per day. Peak was March 28 at just over 12,900.

-- Looking at the user total tab, I subtracted the March 30 from the March 11 and divided by 19 and got 14,900.

1. Am I misunderstanding the two tabs? Shouldn't the numbers be equal? This is the only machine running for this user as well as the only project.

2. If there is an update to the Lunatics stuff, will it be smart enough to "break" gracefully so I know I need to upgrade? This is a difference between, perhaps, having a slightly older and less optimized, and one that's just "too old" to handle the project as it changes.

I assume the BOINC has a facility to check versions of crunching software and tell the local machine's BOINC framework that the crunching software needs an update.

The App_Info.XML file tells BOINC which custom applications are installed and are compatible with which version of the project's stock app.

Beyond that, it is the responsibility of the individual to check for compatibility with future apps, or to get new ones that are compatible (if one has been released). If the current custom app (or "optimized app") is compatible with a future stock app, then it's as simple as adding a new version information section into the existing App_Info.XML file.

If the current custom app is not compatible with a future stock app, then BOINC will only request work that matches the specific version App_Info.XML states the app is compatible with. If no more work is being generated for that version, then no work will be downloaded until the user either reverts to stock or upgrades the custom app.

My Zotac 460 gtx 768meg hits a wall at 950
When I increase voltage by 2 points I can get it to 1000 but then it fails if I go higher.
I settle for 950 gpu core speed and 1900 shader
Mem stays at 1800

Very good card and temps are 50C at that speed with two wu running on the gpu

I am saving up for the 570, then we can see some awesome numbers come out of this machine

Now most projects are nvidia based but in the near future is there any trends that the projects might use ati?

Need some help.
Installed a GeForce GTX460 on Dual core machine and changed the xml file to run 2 WU concurrently. Yesterday, started monitoring the temperature and it nVidia temp. monitor was showing 85 degrees C for the GPU. Thought it was too high so removed a single side panel of the cabinet and the temp dropped by just 5 degress.
Read through this thread...
I have a 600W smps (coolermaster) so apart from getting a water cooled cabinet is there a way to reduce the temperature?

Thnx.
P.S - Its summer around here and the ambient temperature is around 30-35 degrees C.and the PC runs 24x7

I would first make sure your fan is functioning! That is awfully hot, although you didn't mention if you were overclocking the 460. I would start off by getting something like MSI Afterburner and setting the fan to 100%. The stock fan speeds tend to run these cards pretty hot. If I leave mine to stock speeds, they will get into the 80's when overclocked. Setting the fan to 100% brings them down to around 55* C or so.

They are 'safe' to 105c. However I like to keep all of mine under 60c for 24/7 usage. You could buy a better aftermarket air cooler for it, but don't expect miracles, most will only end up dropping you about 10c at most. Personally like I said I wouldn't run it 24/7 at 85c but I did do my GTX 480 between 70-80c around the clock for quite sometime with no side effects.

If you want an after market cooler start looking after a quick search I know you can find them for the 465,470,480 but I haven't seen anything but water cooling besides that. Artic cooling and Zalman make the most popular, and probably easy to get solutions.

Don't worry. 85C for an ambient temperature of 30-35C is fine. Several
GPUs here are over 85C without any Problem.

In the past i had a few Results with Errors if the Temp goes over 95C.

Yes, the fan was running and thats where (I think) a minute burning smell came from ;-)
Its still on the factory specifications so no overclocking.
My own hunch is that the cabinet (design is old box type) is not meant for this kind of serious crunching.
Will try to run the fan a bit faster (MSI after burner), drill a few holes in the cabinet so as to make it more airy . Hope this will help it to reduce the temperature.

Would definately like to go for the water cooled solution but that will have to wait for while.

Don't want to keep it at 85 degrees as during peak summer the outside temperature is above 40 degrees C

Thnx for help.

While we are talking about GTX460's can someone solve my confusion please:

I've just had a look at the various offerings around I see there are several different specs for this card. My brain can cope with the various clock speed offerings (in crude terms faster clock = faster processing), and memory size (again the more the better). But my brain sort of splutters when I see two different core counts - 288 and 336 - surely there is only one core count for the '460? Or am I missing something?, or is this a red herring, and the lower count isn't actually a "proper" '460?

There seems to be a GTX 460 SE with 6 Streaming Multiprocessors instead of 7 - that would account for the missing 48 cores.

I thought the "460SE" would end up being a economy 460 . . . but everywhere I look they seem to be as expensive as the regular GTX460s.

Is it me or are the prices going up on the GTX460 card lately?

If temp drops when you open the side panel, you would benefit from a case with better air flow. Look at the specs for the Antec 300 Illusion. It has 4 120mm case fans and space for a fifth in the side cover. Something like that should get you that 5° with the case closed and perhaps even more. Cranking up the fan on the card won't benefit much if you're not getting the heat out of the case.

The MSI After burner and opening up the cabinet did help. Running it for a couple of days now and the temp is down in low 70's.
Long term will have to get a proper cabinet though. buying is still a few months down the line. Waiting for the first electricity bill since this 24X7 thing started just recently ;-)

Ok so I am reviving this old thread so that us GTX 460 users can discuss the advantages of the new Lunatics x38g app on this card.

Preliminarily, I wanted to report that I also installed the 275.33 driver while I was installing the new lunatics CUDA app and can say that the downclocking issue is no longer an issue for my system.

I also wanted to add that once I started up BOINC and ran a few Work Units, I had to back down my overclock to 850/1700/2000 from the previous 900/1800/2000 as I experienced a driver crash (unsure why this happens as temperatures were at 68C for the card). This was due to the fact that I now enabled 3 WU at a time from the previous 2 WU at a time seeing as the speed up from the driver and lunatics application should provide this to be a worthwhile increase in WU throughput to make 3 WU on a 460 viable.

Will update this once again in a couple weeks with my findings to make sure things run fine as they do now, or if I have to revert back to 2 WU at a time for fastest WU throughput.

Cheers!

Edit: I forgot to add that the shorties really put a strain on the card, temps run stable at 67-68C during shorties, the mid AR units are stable at 63C.

I should add I have mine set at 80% fan speed :)

My New PC has an EVGA GTX460 SC EE(01G-P3-1373-AR), I tried putting one of those magnetic video card filters over the fan opening and found that the stick on magnetic ring is just barely able to fit as the opening is about 65mm in size and the filter is 68mm in diameter, With one ring on the filter sticks in place, But the filter rubs against the fan, So I tried adding on a 2nd ring on top of the 1st ring and the filter would not stick then, So I'm trying an 80mm magnetic ring filter instead, but then I have a severe dust problem here. Performance PCs is aware of this now and has informed the maker of these filters that they don't fit this 1373 card properly.
