Message 42330 - Posted: 3 Nov 2004, 0:36:17 UTC

I noticed something on a couple of my PC's this afternoon, the fact that the BOINC GUI Spikes up to 37% CPU usage quite a bit.

It will go that high then drop back to 2% or 3% usage and then go back up to 37% again and then drop. It keeps doing it over and over.

It's on both of my PC's that have the Widows SP2 installed if that might have anything to do with it I don't know.

What would cause it to keep spiking that high, there is only 1 instance of the GUI in the Task Manager ... ???

I been watchin mine for 5mins or so now, but havnt noticed anything. My CPU usage remains at 0% using 1 thread, 6.3k of mem and 1.7k virtual mem...

i think this is normal. My WUs run at 99%...

try reinstall and or check what other services /apps are running...

I've already checked the Services and didn't see anything out of the ordinary.

It has to be something to do with the BOINC GUI because thats the only thing thats showing any abnormal usage.

I also tried uninstalling & reinstalling BOINC with the same results on those 2 PC's ...

I run Windows XP SP2 on several boxes and using Boinc version 4.13 and they seem to perform "normal"!
I've been watching my CPU usage (boinc_gui) for a couple of minutes and it seems to use 0% and 5,980K Mem Usage, sometimes it comes up to 2% for a second and goes back to 0% again. My setiathome_4.05 is always between 95% and 99% and the Mem Usage is between 15,500K - 16,500K.

Are you using any plug-ins for Boinc?

No I'm not using any plug ins for BIONC, all my other PC's act normal, it's just those 2 I noticed just today doing that. I don't know if it started today or has been going on for awhile & I just didn't notice it.

If you've got the disk-tab selected, using much cpu-power is expected.
Transfer-tab can use some if anything listed, and upload/download can also some cpu-power regardless of whatever tab listed.
Work-tab is constantly updated, and the more wu listed the worse.
Message-tab can use a little, but mostly only on updates. Except during upload/download there shouldn't be much traffic here.
Project-tab will mostly be static, so should use the least cpu-power.

If you're running earlier version than v4.13, the client can try switching projects constantly even if only connected to one project. Also, if this preference is set to a couple of minutes the re-calculation for switch or not can probably use some cpu-power.

"Write to disk at most every NN seconds" can probably also use unnaturally much cpu-power if set to a couple of seconds.

Ok, I think that did it, as soon as I switched both PC's to the Projects Tab the BOINC GUI stayed at 1-2% CPU Usage on both PC's. Thanks a lot Ingleside, much appreciated ... :)

Try the Messages tab. You should see 0-1%, depending on your CPU.

It's the same with either one for me Trane, I can either use the Projects Tab or the Message Tab and the Task Manager only shows 0-1 or 2% usage for the BOINC GUI.

At least thats better than spiking up too 30-37% off and on continually ... :)

===========

No, I've never run the screen saver with either Seti Classic or now the BOINC Projects. In fact that was one of the first things I looked for to see if the screen saver got turned on by mistake or something...

The problems solved anyway, I think it was the simple fact that I managed to get over 300 WU's on each of those Computers (LHC@Home WU's that is) & it was just taxing the GUI to much if I had it on the Work Tab.

And don't nobody yell at me for having that many WU's from LHC because anybody that runs the LHC Project knows a huge majority of the WU's from there only takes any wheres from a few seconds to a couple of minutes to run. So with my PC's I can run that many WU's out in just 3 or 4 days ...
