Is Clouds Rest on the left side of the picture?

Yes! Which means that we are standing at ...

Does the trail go down to the canyon bottom from there? If so my USGS Topo map has no name for the place the photo was taken.

I'm quite sure the photo wasn't taken at North Dome as the angle to Half Dome and the Quarter Domes is wrong. Half Dome is face on from there.

Not sure about the trail to the canyon, but there is a road (closed winters) which can take you to the Tenaya Lake within a minute.
(The lake is behind when you take into account the position of the photographer)

[edit]Just found that the canyon has no foot trail and is notoriously difficult to navigate.[/edit]

If it is near the road then and a minutes drive that might be Olmsted Point.

I was thinking perhaps near the 6700 foot place that is circled.

Is that one of the fortresses built in the alps on the war line in WWI?

It looks like a church to me. I have seen a photo of the forts built by Mussolini on Mont Chaberton on the French frontier at 3000 meters height. The French used mortars and demolished them in a few hours.

It is a religious object, but the wrong location.
