Looks more like the limestone pavements we get in the Yorkshire Dales, but we don't have trees (or skies) like that round here.

I'm pretty sure it's not lava, but rather granite cliff and it's not in the tropics.

Does the trail go down to the canyon bottom from there? If so my USGS Topo map has no name for the place the photo was taken.

I'm quite sure the photo wasn't taken at North Dome as the angle to Half Dome and the Quarter Domes is wrong. Half Dome is face on from there.
