Bed time clue.

Only a few thousand people have visited the place, although probably hundreds of thousands of people have seen the cabin. (and no, you cannot really see it from the nearest paved road).

It doesn't have a chimney so not used as a winter warming hut.
The cabin has common vinyl windows so nobody is interested in preserving its 'unique historical nature'.

Geographically I will start at a) in the US and b) New Mexico?.

Is it 'famous' because some American 'legend' was born/grew up/died there?
Does this have something to do with Billy the Kid?

Geographically, you are on the right track. (more specific though).

There were famous people there, however, none of the listed life events happened to them there.
