NASA has set the interwebs a-tremble with a teasing announcement to the global media that a news conference will be held in Washington DC on Thursday "to discuss an astrobiology finding that will impact the search for evidence of extraterrestrial life". http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/11/30/nasa_aliens_revelations/ Does the Café feel like speculating ? mambo |

In decreasing order or probability: 1. They will ask for more funding 2. They will announce an exo-bio instrument on some planned satellite that may or may not be built in 10 years. 3. One of the extra solar planet searches has found another Goldilocks planet 4. One of the extra solar planet searches has found signs of water vapour in the atmosphere of a Goldilocks planet 5. One of the extra solar planet searches has found traces of organic compounds in an atmosphere 6. another WOW signal 7. They will finally open the vaults at Roswell |

I doubt NASA would announce # 6 just because they arent searching for signals In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but his face. Diogenes Of Sinope |

They will announce the discovery of extraterrestrial life, but this lifeform lives on a 12 mile wide asteroid and is coming toward the Earth at 47,000 miles per hour. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=louXPUW7tHU I do not fight fascists because I think I can win. In 2011, NASA plans to launch the Mars Science Laboratory rover which will continue the search for past or present life on Mars using a variety of scientific instruments. The European Space Agency has been developing the ExoMars astrobiology rover, which is to be launched in 2018. I think that falls under #2 on my list. |

The panel participants for NASA at this announcement are as follows (with specialization in brackets): Mary Voytek (USGS astrobiologist; aquatic microbial ecology) Pamela Conrad (astrobiologist/astrogeology; life on Mars) Felisa Wolfe-Smith (oceanography/astrobiology; arsenic biochemistry, cyanobacteria) Steven Benner (JPL remote-sensing instrument systems manager) James Elser (algal biology/exobiology; evolution of non-carbon life forms) So my guess: NASA's Cassini fly-by of Enceladus detected 'warm cracks'. From some remote-sensing gear, these cracks will be revealed on Thursday to appear to have the chemical signatures consistent with non-carbon-based algal life. <LATER EDIT: On second thought, having looked at the research done by the press-conference participants, my (second guess is) it will be something about algae found on earth but highly unusual. Which means Bill's Roswell guess #7 could be mostly correct./> |

Or maybe and highly unlikely, NASA is bringing back after much updating the Saturn V rocket, But We'll all find out soon. The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

My USAF contacts tell me that in part they will be announcing evidence of a Wal*Mart on Europa. |

anybody know of a good method to get coffee out of a laptop keyboard? At least the screen is clean now... I've read somewhere on the boards that they survive a pass through the dishwasher (if you can separate it from the laptop). And dry it very meticulously before reimplanting! The Sun newspaper in the UK broke the news embargo early. Now its all over the internet. This is the news; bacteria has been found at the bottom of Mono Lake in California's Yosemite National Park which is rich in arsenic - usually poisonous to life Story; http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/space/8174040/Life-as-we-dont-know-it-discovery-could-prove-existence-of-aliens.html --------------- So they found arsenic based life in Mono lake, California. To be honest, i'm not sure just how significant that is, so we will have to wait for the NASA experts to tell us exactly why it merited such a bold press announcement. I call it hyping up a less than average science discovery. This discovery does NOT get us any closer to detecting other life in the universe. John. |

Story; http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/space/8174040/Life-as-we-dont-know-it-discovery-could-prove-existence-of-aliens.html Mono lake picked itself up and moved into Yosemite National Park? Now that is a real story! |

Story; http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/space/8174040/Life-as-we-dont-know-it-discovery-could-prove-existence-of-aliens.html Only about 50-100 miles east of the park - pretty close for a journalist. Now, if the extinct volcano under Mono Lake decided to come back to life....... Donald Infernal Optimist / Submariner, retired |

Astro-Biology ? It will probably be one of these: Evidence of ammonia or other precursor componds to amino acid formation found floating in a gas cloud. Wobble of a star that suggests a planet that might be in the temperate zone for supporting life. Fossils of bacilli or other primitive life found in a meterite. Evidence of primitive or ocean like denizens of life on earth in a thermally hot environment I would be pleased if it were more electrifying than these. Daddio |

Stunning would be life on Venus. Interesting would be proof of primitive life on one of the moons of our gas giants. Interesting would be any planet in an extra solar system in the habital zone. Even gas giants could have a moon of the right size. (That could be interesting. There could be 2 moons supporting life around the same gas giant leading to the little green men really in range of the bug eyed monsters)... BOINC WIKI |
