I downloaded and installed the program. Now I have no idea of what to do next.

Message 1049660 - Posted: 19 Nov 2010, 18:57:35 UTC - in response to Message 1049659.

After you install BOINC, you need to attach to a project such as SETI@Home. The wizard should have automatically prompted you to attach to a new project on first launch of BOINC.

Once you attach to SETI@Home or another project, then BOINC takes care of the rest. Since SETI@Home has been down since Oct 28 due to two severs failing and won't be back up for at least another two weeks, I would strongly suggest joining a second project as well. This way you have redundancy if one of the projects ever goes down again.

Thanks for your quick reply. I had attached to seti@home but wasn't sure if something was supposed to happen after that.

I guess I will look for another project to join.

Welcome Elthib,
Everything looks like it is set up okay, you are requesting tasks. The problem is on the server side. Something went down over the weekend and should be repaired tomorrow morning California time when the staff get back in to work. Once work is being sent out again your BOINC manager will automatically request and download work units and you will start crunching numbers. Do be patient though, everybody is low on work right now so it may take a while to get through to the servers.

Heya, I just started as well and choose SETI@home for a project. Now it says loading Astropulse 175 hours remaining? Is that installing the project or running calculations?

thats an estimated time. It should finish much faster than that estimated time. perhaps 30-40 hours with the standard app

that is calculation time only

That´s the estimated time of crunching, based on previous collected data. In most cases the time needed to finish a task is less, depending on what kind of resources your PC has, like x CPU´s or GPU´s.

Message 1064755 - Posted: 8 Jan 2011, 21:12:51 UTC

I downloaded BOINC and ran it, but it will not attach a project. The BOINC manager says SETI@home is attached once I follow the steps, but after I click Finish, the Manager window still says nothing's attached. What gives? I registered my account manually, because the Manager wouldn't do that either. When the website window opened after entering my account and password, it just said, "No such account." And it still says it, even though I can log in!

What's your operating system?

Are there any messages in the Messages tab/window?

After creating your account, did you attach as returning user?

When the website window opened after entering my account and password...

You have to enter your email address and password.

When attaching your computer, you have to enter your email address too.

You appear to have work onboard. BOINC appears to be sending and receiving work. You appear to already be signed in. Im not sure that you're having any problems since you can post and have work

There are two different attachment points.

1) Between the Manager and the daemon (UI and controller).
2) Between the daemon and the projects.

If you are getting and receiving work, you are probably OK on @2. Possibly the problem is with #1.

The way to distinguish is by switching to the advanced tab and looking at the messages tab. If there is nothing there, then you have a problem with the connection between the manager and the daemon.

Those aren't your issues but SETI's. The download server is swamped with requests after a long outage.

Just be patient. :-)

And don't expect to get SETI tasks for your ATI GPU 0: ATI Radeon HD5x00
- there is still NO standard SETI app for ATI GPUs (maybe in the future).

I too am new to BOINC. I started the SETI project, and now what? Where do I look for radio signals in space? All I see is a task that is running. Where are the instructions on what to expect when you start a project? How can you see real time data coming from the satellite dish?

SETI@Home records the data from a dish after paying for "observing" time. The data is then shipped to the Space Sciences Laboratory at the University of California at Berkeley.

The SETI Project Administrators then pre-process the recordings and divide them into chunks to be downloaded by volunteers.

Once the volunteer's client downloads the workunit, the CPU or GPU begins to mathematically process the recorded sounds looking for some form of repetitive signal that would indicate something sent out by an intelligent being(s). Sometimes our own intelligent signals get caught in the recordings and have to be thrown out.

Once the volunteer's client has finished processing or "crunching" the workunit, the result is sent back to the server and waits to be verified for accuracy. This is done by matching the results with that of another volunteer's computer. If they match, credit is granted.

The human at the computer does not manually search for signals, and the data is not sent in real time.
