Thanks for pointing that out. I was only aware of the Xeon 74xx (Dunnington) series. I didn't know about the 75xx+ series (Nehelem EX).
I guess it could be considered a step back in processing power, but it's still a step forward in reliability considering the existing Xeon 7530 motherboard was a test unit, and if I recall correctly the guys in the lab said one of the CPU sockets didn't work.

Two servers, two names from Gemini--Castor and Pollux.
Orion is a nice name.....
Yes, it is.
that would also make a nice logo for the server :)

How about Sirius? Isn't that the binary system that the Dogon tribe predicted some 1000 years ago? They claim it's where their gods came from. Kind of fitting for the SAH project, no? |

... But some of our more kitty-loving co-crunchers might object, Sirius having the epithet "The Dog Star"... :-)

The story of the Dogon peoples’ knowledge of Sirius is basically an “urban myth”, popularized a few decades ago in a book called The Sirius Mystery, which IIRC claimed ET visitors as the source. Even as reported, sensationalized, the Dogon legends concerning Sirius have to be stretched quite a bit to fit the actual star-system, and it appears there were ample opportunities for the oral tradition to have been ‘contaminated’ with modern knowledge through contact with Europeans.
Alpha Canis Majoris is the brightest star in our skies (aside from the Sun, of course), being one of our nearest neighbours; the primary, Sirius A, is slightly larger and more luminous than Sol. The white-dwarf component, Sirius B, was discovered in the early XIX c., by means of a primitive version of one of the main techniques now used to find extrasolar planets.

the two servers are VERY impressive
my question is ...
in the UNlikely event of another Outage
can 1 Server[NEW] carry SETI , or would another
month long outage ensue.
or is there some Redundancy inplace
using NAS/SAS for storage and a 3rd SErver
for backup/restore ?

Mark.. right idea, wrong timing.
Let them get the two servers going.. GPU group is putting together a 3rd. The lab needs time to catch up, and see where they fit best. And the Setizens..
Well two other issues. They have holidays to pay for. And SETI's annual regular drive is coming soon.
So I am going to try to save some nickles for the regular drive. Early next year.. we can see what they need for a new toy. By then the computers will be faster and the prices lower.
