I have been a long time cruncher, I know the system has its issues, nothing it ever perfect and I know they do the best they can. However, it is now the 20th of October and I still can not connect to get work! I would say it has been 10-15 days now? Is this right? I read on the technical page that they were having issues but that was last updated on the 13th. I run the optimized apps so I deleted everything from one of my systems, and downloaded the current boinc version, 3 days now and it can not even attach to seti. I just want to make sure I am not the only one here. If so, curious if they have a clue when it will be back up and running. I'm not in a race nor do I get paid to crunch but I also do not want my computers to site idle when they could be doing something useful.

Thanks!

They seem to be partially back on. The project just had a server go down in a bad way. The server is being permanently removed from use. They will be using a backup server that will give only partial work load to the project. Their is an emergency fund raiser going on to finish paying for the second needed server.

So summery
limited work and functionality until the server mork can be replaced. The backup server jocelyn will be carrying the load until the new server is bought and burned in.

I would hope that the server has been burnt in before they receive it at Seti. I think it should be ready to start installing the software and configuration, rather than need burning in. I used to work in PC manufacture (servers very rarely, they served the home market more) and each machine used to get a minimum of 24 hours burn-in before despatch.

BigWaveSurfer - I think you only have a couple of options here. Either add another project so the machines can crunch while they don't have Seti work, or if you're like me, and only crunch Seti, shut them down for a couple of days. I have one machine that ran out on Monday, and has been shut down ever since.

Jocelyn has been moved to make her the master db server, but even though she's reliable and time-served, she doesn't have the cpu power or memory capacity that Mork had, so work will still be limited at the moment, possibly for a few more weeks. The replacement servers were ordered today, but I have no idea on lead time. The fund drives have made it possible, but I'm also not sure what kind of support pack they will be getting on top of that.

Giz.

I don't mind waiting....but I have never seen, what to me is, such a big outage. My one system ran out over a week ago and still nothing. Like I said, it can not even attach. Obviously I will wait it out, crossing my fingers sooner than later!

It was a big crash. It is not near fixed. Give it about 3 weeks and see where we are.

Given the bits of info I have been able to glean......that might be around the right timeframe.

Not pretty, but the project will survive quite well until then.

The kitties are anxiously awaiting the arrival of the new HP servers......
I hope they have the power to do the project justice.

You fellow users have just astounded with your response to the donation requests......just astounded.

I hope that our efforts are rewarded when the new servers come online.

Coming soon, to a new project near you........

Well at least I was able to attach to the project today, obviously no work, but one step at a time I guess! I guess the one good thing about all this is a lower electrical bill this month :)

By the hand of fate, about 10 days ago, I decided to run SETI again after an 18 month break......basically, because I built a new rig with the 6-core Phenom 1055T and thought that it would be great for crunching.....

......boy did I pick the wrong time to come back!!! I've had 2-3 WU's in the last 10 days.....so, lucky old Einstein gets all the 6 cores to itself!!

And the Milkyway project is really enjoying 100% usage of my ATI 5850 for about 18 hours per day....

I'll try to stick with SETI this time though......unless the power bill gets silly which is why I quit last time.......(not really SETI's fault.....my new apt had way too many appliances and our bill was stupidly high so cutbacks had to be made and BOINC was one of them)...

But my heart is with SETI and its core beliefs......I do believe.......I just wish there was the money for super-massive servers that would end all our SETI woes....I know......I should donate......I'll try to get 20 bucks or so into the fund as long as my wife doesn't notice......she is SO not a SETI supporter!!
