Thanks for the warm welcomes and encouragement! I am new to BOINC, and this is my first BOINC project. Here are several things I noticed when I started:

  • The project has about 50% uptime, with downtimes usually lasting for three consecutive days of every week. With the default 0.35-day work buffer, my computer runs out of SETI@home tasks whenever there's downtime.
  • The CUDA tasks frequently have computation errors. I suspect that this is a software problem, because I keep the host computer in a relatively cool environment. However, the computer is a netbook that uses air cooling.
  • The CUDA applications require no less than 256 megabytes of GPU memory. With old NVIDIA graphics drivers, the SETI@home Enhanced 6.08 application is able to run, but the server tells me to upgrade to the latest driver to run all of the project's GPU applications. With the latest driver, the server tells me that at least 256 MB of memory is required, the CUDA application becomes stuck waiting for GPU memory, and the server does not send me any GPU work.
  • The CUDA applications do not have screensavers.

Although it was a bumpy start, I am quite satisfied, because I am at least able to complete a few tasks each day and watch the thoughtful screensavers.

For science!

3 down, 4 up is the current schedule. We are all trying to get the servers back up to par and healthy again, which might (may not, because the lab needs to do stuff without us in the database too) lessen the downtime in the future.

If you set to about a 3-4 day cache size, you should be able to keep busy through the outage. It may run dry, if it does you save electricity. Attaching to other projects is another way to fill in the gaps.

I am unfamiliar with that video card, but it looks minimal. If you can get it working correctly great! Sorry, no suggestions for that.

The CUDA applications do not put out graphics for a good reason: it is making constructive use of your video potential elsewhere.. to actually do the math for SETI.

Welcome aboard!
