Haven't been able to connect in over a week...

9/29/2010 1:21:39 AM SETI@home Scheduler request failed: Couldn't connect to server
9/29/2010 1:21:57 AM Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site
9/29/2010 1:21:58 AM Internet access OK - project servers may be temporarily down.

There was a server failure early last weekend which required more than a quick fix. The Berkeley staff were not able to fix it on Monday and so on Tuesday they decided to do their, now normal, three day shutdown.
It is hoped that in this period they have cured the problem and that the upload server will be enabled early Friday (Berkeley time [~16:00 UTC]) and after a suitable time enable reporting, requests and d/loads.

I'm getting very worried about the ongoing sustainability of the project. I have not connected now for well over a week. I have a stack of work units waiting to upload. I've been with SETI@Home for a long time and have never experienced such sustained and continual failures and shut downs as have occurred in recent months - and 'failure' is the appropriate word. I see that when others say this they are attacked by various people who seem to have great sympathy for the project admins. Someone has to say this is not satisfactory. We can pretend that all is well, but it clearly it is not. The repeated failures will not endear potential sponsors to SETI and risk the very future of it. I am saying this as something needs to be done. For every person that says it, there will be between ten and a hundred who do not and who will just drift away. If there was an alternative I would at the very least be sharing my GPU time with it, and I would consider completely 'moving over'.

RTX,

No attacks here... and I share some of your frustration, but none of your concern.

The outages that we are enduring are due to overdue replacements and upgrades necessary to maintain this project. The admins are a small group that have not been well funded, but changes are being made to the equipment to make the project more robust and ready to expand further.

There are many GPU projects to connect with BOINC that would like your assistance. I have chosen to let my GPU rest for the time being, as this is the only processor that runs Seti on my machine. I run CPDN & Rosetta on my CPUs.

Cheers!

Hi, thanks for the response. I run World Community Grid, Rosetta and CPDN on my CPUs but have yet to find a GPU project that I want to support and also does not cause massive problems w.r.t. my day-to-day use of the various machines (rendering less than acceptable screen performance). Thanks for your explanation regarding servers, too. I think communication could be much better. I'd like to see some textual explanation on the server status page. At the moment it just says they are down, nothing to explain when they will be back up or much else at all. Communication is at best, poor.

" We'll then leave the projects on through next weekend, ie no normal 3 day outage."

doesn´t look like that.

My own hope is that they shall come back up today......
They have probably still been resynching the drive array on bambi to take over the upload duties from bruno and transferring the files.

I hope they defer the half week outage for an extra week -- as they have now had a six day outage (two weeks worth of three day outages).

I have it on good authority that the project will be down right up to the time the boys press the buttons to bring it back up on line again!! :-) Hopefully that will be shortly after they come in to work today but you never know. It all depends on the servers condition and temperament today. In other words the servers will come back up when they dang well feel like it!

Did I mention I hate computers?? :-)

If you grab a hammer and threaten to destroy it a computer comes up immediately. Just try.

Outages are longer when a venture has too little excess server capacity. All of us who participate do donate through our (only slightly) higher electricity bills, but that donation does not help with the necessary equipment and other costs.

As an employee of a state university, I know how much service we wring out of old computer hardware with underpaid staff. While I see several folks on this thread are already contributors, this outage could serve as a reminder for all of us to contribute a few $$$ (as it has for me!).

Donations have been meager this year: Donation record

Expenses are high, but quite reasonable for such a venture: Fall 2008 budget

If everyone will make a small donation, it will help the bottom line a bit, and hopefully boost morale a lot around the SETI office...

My 2 cents' worth,
- Earl

I just don't see the good in that. If they are going to have outages then they have to prepare for the hits when they come back on line. Hopefully they will learn to adjust, but it shouldn't be a users responsibility...
