	yes, sales tax. Only exception is if purchased for resale. Don't forget the recycling/waste tax. It probably has to be paid also.

	The machine we are getting is around $13K with tax and shipping. Tax? You're a university / government agency. You shouldn't have to pay tax. I'm not sure on the law in California but I didn't think that any state in the US charged tax on purchases for a university. Anything purchased for end-use, i.e., not for resale, by any entity is liable for the state sales tax. Even if you purchase it from out of state from a vendor that legally isn't required to collect California Sales Tax and have it shipped into California it is still liable for sales tax. Technically, you are suppose to report the purchase to the California State Board of Equalization (isn't that a nice euphemism?) and pay the tax directly. BTW, this is not just California. Most states have their sales tax (or use tax) laws written in a similar manner. ____________
