Message 1033596 - Posted: 17 Sep 2010, 16:24:23 UTC - in response to Message 1033588.

I got enough WU for a few days, but I hit retry the moment the servers came online this morning. The splitters are all running, but there is still a shortage of work.

PS Haven't seen all green in some time. http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/sah_status.html

Thanx for the update Jeff, hope the new fan doesn't take too much out of the budget.

I would assume that since SETI is paying rent (sort of) that the building repairs are part of the building maintenance and would not come out of the SETI budget directly.

My understanding is the cooler is Seti's own, since the building shuts down the cooling out of hours to save power.

Not sure about that.....I would think that HVAC required for computer support would still be part of the campus infrastructure. There has to be other computer rooms in need of constant AC on campus that do not shut down when the rest of the cooling does.

On campus probably. In that building.. Well I told you my understanding of it.
There is a single cooler for that closet, SETI's own. If it fails, everything follows.

While not logical from a computer admin perspective, it is in keeping with normal organizational responses to being "green". What they seem to forget is most of the cooling is installed in recent years to keep equipment comfortable, not people. But when people are not there, organizations(corporations are no different) want to shut down cooling to save money.

A quick peek for those that do not know...

Server Closet December 22 2008

Yes it started life as Janitorial Closet (in the hall across from the the Seti Spaces). Then you stuff 3 racks of server hardware in and close the doors to reduce what sounds like standing behind a Jet getting ready for takeoff.

The air conditioner is the only thing keeping it "somewhat" livable.

Thanks for the "picture" of the conditions you guys work under. I got a "server out of disk space" today it was very odd but in my very small world of SETI it seemed oddly, "cool", my mini machine has over come the mighty BOINC servers...I win! Any way thanks again for the work you guys do to keep the project alive!

I've received the same error many times today as well. If this is a new problem, the exact string is:

Error reported by file upload server: Server is out of disk space.

Hi,

what's wrong? I can't upload my work units. Status of the servers are green, but BOINC say the servers are temporarily down ...

Much work units are waiting for upload ... :-)

Best wishes

Same for me - so it must be a general problem. We will have to wait and see what the experts have to say. Roger

See number crunching threads. We have yet to recover from the scheduled tuesday-thursday outtage. We are guessing they are aware they have problems.

Status of the servers may be all green, but if you look at the Master Database, you'll see it hasn't been seen for 86 hours now. Looks like something's stuck.

What that means is the script that measures how many queries/second the Master database receives hasn't run in 86hrs, not that the database hasn't been seen in 86hrs,
since you, myself and everyone else can logon to Seti proves the master database is online.

Make your PC a barometer, hygrometer, thermometer and high accuracy data logger.
