I've had my first "run" come back with a validation error. Is this due to something that happened at my end, or the data, or . . . ? (The computer being used is a MacBook 4.1 running on OS X version 10.5.8.)

"Validation error" means that the validator couldn't find the result when it wanted to compare it to the other one. Can you still find the messages about uploading of that task? You should find them if you look for "12fe07aa.21435.72.4.10.136_1" in the stdoutdae.txt file (I'm not sure about the suffix) in your BOINC data directory.

I thought validation error meant that the task did not match the rest.

"Validate error" has the very specific meaning that the Validator couldn't find the uploaded result file. Considering the several cases where storage space ran out since May, or server crashes and such, it is not too surprising that some fraction of uploaded files have gone missing.
(And it's a "Validate error", I checked.:-)

AFAICT those are considered successful—not reported as an error—but marked “invalid”. IOW “validation error” means that the validation process itself failed, not that the result was evaluated & rejected.
