A few years back, SetiUSA (my former team) raised a significant amount of $ (over $6k I believe) and they were not allowed to request the naming of a server.

Before we go through all this voting--can we have some confirmation (by posting in this thread) from Eric himself as to whether this will or will not be allowed.

I believe the point is to create a fiat before there can be objection.

I personally believe we can request anything. And they can say no.

I have no problem with Oscar. Lab might feel differently.

Clairification: I have no issue with it being called Oscar-I agree with it. Just wonder if it's worth it if we know Eric isn't even going to acceed to our wishes.

The important thing is they get the hardware they need. This is just fun and games.

Oscar works for me.

And forget Eric making the decisions, we all know who wears the pants in that family. What do ya think, Angela?

Hi Blurf,

I don't recall the prior request and what the name was, so you might have to remind me. I do know that we did name one server based upon donor request (bruno was a request, I believe, and perhaps ptolemy was as well). I think we had also named a NAS box on the request of the donor, but that name was only visible internally.

I don't see any reason that we would deny this request, but I haven't discussed it with Matt and Jeff (who is out sick today). But after Oscar, will we be naming future machines after Six-million Dollar Man characters or Sesame Street characters?

Guess it can't hurt to voice our opinions. I think Oscar would make a fine name.

Oscar fits right in then. Not only Mark's deceased cat but also the name of a Sesame Street character and I think it might have been The six-million Dollar Man's boss. It's been too long since I've seen that show, I can't really remember for sure.

Oscar Goldman, the Director of the OSI (played by Richard Anderson).

Hey, I was right for a change!! :-)

Eric-thanks for chiming in. I don't remember the specifics and I no longer have access to the Setiusa boards to reread the discussion. I really personally didn't have a concern but I know the Team Owner emailed you and you flat-out said no. That much I remember.
