do you intend to have a PC offline for a time or just have computers that aren't online and wish to compute on them. a permanently offline Computer is a bi tricky to setup for crunching. I wouldnt recommend it

If you wish to take a computer offline for several days then its no problem. IIRC its a matter of changing a setting in BOINC on your network connectivity for that PC.

I don't believe there is any easy reliable way to get work to and from an offliine computer without a bunch of manual work. It's probably not worth the time to do it

Since work downloaded is registered to the computer that downloaded it, that computer also has to do the uploading & reporting.

So that means that you'd have to copy the whole BOINC data directory to the off line computer, install BOINC there, pointing to that data directory, wait for it do all the work. Then copy the whole data directory back to the computer doing the downloading, have it upload the work, get new work, copy the data directory again, etc.

In the mean time you can't crunch with the same computer doing the uploading. Well, you could, if you installed BOINC twice (which isn't easy to do) and had two different hostIDs registered for it (also not easy to do).

As skildude says, too much hassle. It's easier for your friend to get internet, no matter how cheap and slow.

Just wondering if your friend ever connects the computer to the net. Even if he only connects once a week or so he could still contact the servers then to upload and download what he needs then crunch it in between times. All he would need is enough time to report and get new work.

Thank you all for the replies all I did was copied all the answers here to another forum to his question. Now just waiting for his reply.

For the future benefit it should noted on the any big Seti boards that to use any possible unused cpu's boinc and seti need to have this offline option more feasible.

Most computers in the world are internet-connected. BOINC-SETI are not so starved for CPU cycles that they need to add the complexity in allowing non-internet connected devices to attach as well. Even an analog dial-up modem would work with BOINC/SETI. It's time to move up to the 21st century.

At least most computers connect to the internet occasionally - which is all that is needed.
