I ran Setiathome some 8 or 10 years ago under Mac Classic. Then I switched computers, forgot about the project, but now I decided to run it again. I followed instructions on how to switch to BOINC and reclaim my old account stats, but it doesn't work. The old email address is still valid, but when I enter it into the field and click OK, it comes back saying that that email address is active and cannot be claimed, or words to that effect.
Anything else I could try?

Then your SETI classic account is probably already connected to a BOINC account. Try logging in to BOINC using the old email address.

Actually, I meant to say: log off from your current SETI account page and then log on again with the old email address.

Logging in with my old email address won't help as my old is still in use and was used to revive the old account. I think I messed up and probably chose 'new user' when I should have created the account as an 'existing user'. I'm not sure, but that could be why the reviving bit didn't work.

I did find my old password though and tried logging in with that, but it didn't work either. Without an email address I can't log in and with the old email address it comes back with the message that that address is connected to another account (which it is: my new one!). So I guess my old data is lost now. Pity.

Sorry for responding a bit late. I had a deadline and have been real busy for awhile...

You seem to keep on creating accounts. I only was speaking of logging out and logging in again, not of creating a new account. ;-)

Currently there are two new ones, one from 27 Aug 2010 23:21:24 UTC and one from 28 Aug 2010 2:31:21 UTC. Actually, you have posted once from each.

I found one account (using User search) from 2003 named "Levina". Is that possibly yours?

Oh, right. I'm so sorry for creating two accounts now! And yes, that old 2003 account is mine indeed. When I opened that account I scribbled in one of my notebooks: Setiathome, 19-3-2003 and even the time: 16:27:34 hr, can you believe it? And I have a password for that old account. You think that those two new accounts can be deleted and the old, Classic one, can be revived? Or one of the new ones can be linked to the old one?

No need to be sorry, it's no big deal.

The two new accounts can't be deleted, you should just change vital data (email address) to dummy entries and forget them, after you've successfully revived the old account.

You can't link the classic account to one of the new accounts either, because it has already be linked to the old (BOINC) account.

I'd suggest you reactivate the old account, because it shows the classic data.

First, try to log in to that account. To do so, click the ACCOUNT link on top (or bottom) of this page and then click on "Log out".

Then exit and restart your browser and again click the ACCOUNT link on any SETI@home page. Enter the email address of the old account and your password.

If that works (you should now see the classic data near the bottom of the page), you'll have to do the same procedure to log into your new accounts and change the email adresses to some dummy value so that you can use it for your original account (the email address can only be used once with SETI@home).

If you are finished with all that, the last thing to do is attach your computer to the original (old) account. When doing so, select "returning user" because otherwise you'll create just another new account.

If anything doesn't work or isn't clear, come back here and ask. :-)

I followed your instructions but it didn't work. I think because the old email address is also the email address I used for the new account (thinking that would reactive the old account). If I try to log in with that email address and with the old password (which is a 9 digit number) of the old account, it says that the password is incorrect. If I type in the password alone without an email address it is asking for an account key, which I don't have.

Anything else I could try?

As I already said, it's impossible for two accounts to have the same email address. Indeed, the former address would reactivate the old account, but obviously, you didn't use the correct one. Try to remember which one you used back then.

Do you have any backup copies of your old BOINC installation? There's one file in each BOINC data directory that contains the account key.

When you kept insisting that I must have used a different address for the old account, I dusted off my retired iMac, hoping, but not expecting to find still some setiathome data in there. But luckily it was all there and I found out that you were right all along. Then I had no problem logging in with the correct old address and the account key and in short: everything works now and setiathome is running. I have changed the two new accounts I made by giving them dummy addresses etc.

We left some casualties behind (abandoned work units) in the process, but that's peanuts compared to the legions of "ghost units" currently created by the SETI servers. (They'll be resubmitted after reaching their deadline, nothing to worry about.)

It looks better with the earlier join date to the left, doesn't it. ;-)

Now wait until the zeros get filled up! :-D
