I didn't delve into the project side explanations for the conversion of SETI to a half-time project -- is this 'regular' 84 hour outage (including at least 6 hours fore and aft of the 3 days) going to be in place for the long haul or is it something that will revert back to the previous 12 hour outage (including at least 3 hours fore and aft of the 6 hour maintenance) at some point in the relatively near future?

As others have noted, the concept behind BOINC is multi-project and one thing going to half time here should do is encourage active folks doing BOINC (there are hundreds of thousands of inactive BOINC'ers) to spread the processing wealth to full time projects.

SETI a half-time project ? My comps are crunching 24/7. As far as the Boinc concept, I couldn't care less. Looking through the list of production projects, I can't see anything that could handle the demand on work and stability that SETI has done in the past years, so cut them some slack to catch their breath and do some science.

I do have to say.. for me I have been lucky so far. I have set a cache for 4 days, and have enough work to stay busy. AND.. when they flip the "on" switch I have enough work that i dont request any on friday because they have the limits down low. So overall I think I am playing nice without going overboard. for the record.. 2 quad cores, one with a GTS250. nothing special.. john

5 out of 6 of my pc's agree with you (but let's not talk about the odd 1 out here).

Cheers.

I had almost enough work but my problem was report times. The last of my jobs is due to report in an hour and all were finished before their respective report times, but all 7 will be over time when systems are back. They have all attempted but failed to upload, of course.

Does anyone know if there is an extension of report times if they are during the closure periods? Presumably they won't have been able to re-issue them.

I know first hand, there is not. Lost 21 units this way last week.

Still got work, MB tasks no AstroPulse, though, but servers will go online today.
I mean U'Load, D'Load, cause I still can't UPLoad.
A few hours, I hope......

That's really surprising Soft^spirit. You should get credit, even if overdue, so long as you beat the reissue back in.

Made it for you....

What did you do with the result? If you'd reported it - or even if you still have it, and can report it quickly after the outage, before Computer 5410655 reports, it would still be accepted.

Are you sure those were really on your computer and completed? Looks like typical ghost WUs to me.

Oops, you and Richard got it going. I'll shut up now.

Positive. I was sitting there watching them time out as the servers came back up slightly later than usual.

It's part of the newer "intelligent" BOINC clients V6.10.5x and maybe a little bit earlier. If a unit is past it's return date it automatically deletes it. Even if its complete and ready to upload. It's a bleeding PIA especially when you only have 3 days or so when returns are accepted by the project servers.

As I have said before the BOINC client is getting too "smart" for it's own good.
