Allways sad when a man of knowledge and a contributor to the science passes, am sure his work will live on.

I am sorry to hear of Dr. Backer's passing. His contributions to our discipline will be long remembered. My heartfelt sympathy is with his family. The astronomical community will feel the loss but at the same time celebrate his life and how he touched the lives of others and encouraged them to be a part of the next generation of astronomers.

Rest In Peace,

Dr. Ronald C. Spencer

Don's work in Radio Astronomy has been a great contribution and he was an inspiration to all of us that followed and believed in his work. He will be missed.

Does anyone know who is survived by him and also if the family are receiving cards and condolences?

I googled his name. Here is an excerpt:

n addition to his wife, Susan Backer of Berkeley, Backer is survived by his son, David of Rockville, Maryland: his mother, Lura Backer of Bredenton, Fla., and a niece, a nephew and a granddaughter. His father, Phillip Backer, died in 1998 and his brother, Ken Backer, in 2007.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Donald Backer Memorial Fund, to continue his legacy and to support the new frontiers of astronomy research and education. Checks can be made out to the UC Berkeley Foundation and mailed to Barbara Hoversten, Astronomy Department, MC3411, University of California, Berkeley, CA 94720-7450.

A private memorial service is scheduled.

As an Einstein@home user, I am too searching for pulsars in the Arecibo data.

He discovered the first millisecond pulsar while at Arecibo. We at Einstein@home are following his steps, that is the best way to honor him.

The legacy of a scientist is the research and knowledge they impart to the rest of us and the enlightenment that knowledge brings to us as we move into the future.

Don's efforts in science were such and his legacy an achievement few attain. His family and heirs may know with certainty that they knew one who with sincerity and effort passed on a wealth of knowledge.

Thanks Don for sharing. Rest now in the night knowing with certainty that the bright dawn of the resurection will come in the twinkling of an eye and that we shall all dwell in God's universe forever.

My condolences are belated but genuine. Through his work, Don Backer helped to reassure us that our brief sojourn on planet Earth need not be one of separation from the rest of the universe. For many of us, his passing is the beginning of his second adventure in the continued story of life and the planting of his memory in our hearts and minds as a seeker of knowledge and truth.
