Message 1015625 - Posted: 14 Jul 2010, 18:06:59 UTC

Everytime I try to install BOINC on my system I get a message that "The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-rom or other removable disk that is not available" and promts me to insert the BOINC disc and click OK. I then locate the boinc.msi file and click OK, but get the message that "boinc.msi is not a valid installation package"
What am I doing wrong?

There must be something wrong with 6.10.58 download. Tried it multiple times.I get error 1714 can't remove old version. An older version was installed a few months ago. Right now there is nothing on my computer called BOINC or anything else seti related. I even got rid of the page file to test. Shut off any security software and any other software that may cause a 'bump'.
Running Win 7 home prem

If you get the error message, there's nothing wrong with the download. There's probably still something BOINC related on your computer. Have you read all the previous posts in this thread and tried the suggestions in them? If not, do so first.

Thank You. If there is anything related on this computer, none of my search programs can find it. I know there is nothing in the registry. I even ran JV16 power tools in cleaner mode , which I never use, and looked at every line. I guess win 7 could have something hidden. Will start from scratch 'again'.

You may have a BOINC.msi file still in one of the sub-directories in C:\Windows\Downloaded Installations\

if there's nothing there anymore, then open up regedit (Start -> All programs -> Accessories -> Run, type regedit, click OK) and in it navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Space Sciences Laboratory, U.C. Berkeley\BOINC Setup

Delete that whole entry. Exit regedit.

Now try to install BOINC.

Message 1022270 - Posted: 3 Aug 2010, 15:35:28 UTC - in response to Message 1022250.

I have done all of that before. The one thing I notice the boinc download says 7.22mb and the file I get is 6.88mb every time.

As of now, I rechecked and there is NOTHING boinc related on this computer. I even tried to reinstall my old version 6.10.18 ? before I deleted it and that would not install.

There has to be something with the installer and win 7. Both machines I have are Win 7 and I don't have a XP image to restore and test.

Is there someone I can contact about the file ?

OK, the normal error for a corrupt download is different than error 1704. Have you tried to:

- delete your temporary internet files?
- download BOINC to a different location than you normally download it to?

Can you try to download it from here, please?

That's perfectly normal given the difference between bytes, KiB and MiB. The actual file size is 7,216,544 bytes. Divide that number by 1024 to get KiB, then divide again by 1024 to get MiB, which comes to 6.88MiB.

The file size is correct.

There has to be something with the installer and win 7. Both machines I have are Win 7 and I don't have a XP image to restore and test.

For comparison, I've installed BOINC v6.10.58 on 5 Windows 7 machines (one Home Premium, two Ultimate x64 and two Professional x64) without issue.

When clicking on the download link, can you press and hold the shift button if using Internet Explorer. This is supposed to bypass any cached previous downloads and get a fresh copy.

If that doesn't work, then it's something on your system.

Is this a work computer and do you have permission to run BOINC on it

It's a home computer.

I found an image from May 2010 which still had Boinc installed. Installed the new version without problems.

I guess something went wrong with the uninstall. Still makes me wonder what was left behind and why I couldn't find it.

Ah, the wonder of Windows.

From your last post it is not clear (for me) is the problem solved?

If you still wonder is the setup file corrupted read this:
