I respectfully submit that there is no need to panic. All is going according to plan.

There's no plan like no plan... Is it time to panic yet?

In the previous Panic Mode thread Ghost WUs were mentioned. I have checked my single host and according to the server I have 605 Tasks in Progress but on my Host I have only 442 and as none have been reported since the outage it looks like I have 163 Ghosts sitting on the server. Will these Ghosts be reissued or will I have to run my cache down and then do a detach and attach so they can be reissued?

Just let it be. When they haven't been processed by their due date, they'll be re-issued.

OK thanks Grant but I thought as it will be a few weeks before they time out I could speed up the process. They will probably be classed as Invalid and therefore reduce the number of tasks issued.

As a long-time Wall St. trader I can assure you that no one makes a dime panicking. You will not make any headway panicking here either. Let's relax, pull the cork on something smooth, support the SETI folks and trust in their expertise. My Canadian friend here has the right of it. Things have a way of taking care of themselves if you allow for it.

If it's convenient, releasing those tasks for immediate reissue is a courtesy to both the wingmates and the project. Getting the project database corrected to reality is helpful, reducing how long the WU needs to occupy download storage space maybe even more so. OTOH, there are probably many other hosts with Ghosts from the same time period.

Perhaps more important, AFAICT there is no penalty for the host involved in releasing tasks that way, but each task not reported by deadline will reset the consecutive_valid count for the app version to zero and decrease the max_jobs_per_day by one. 163 such might reduce effective quota to an inconvenient level...

We're in a new era of how the servers deal with errors and such, some FAQ answers need rethinking.

Thanks for that Joe, it was what I was thinking to get them re-issued ASAP but it will take a time to clear my cache. I wonder how many ghosts there are out there.

It's a shame that they cannot come up with a way to implement the resend feature in a manner that would be server-friendly.

something like a ping: can you take these?
followed by a pong: I will poll you when I have time.

kind of a scenario?

In principle.... I like.

In practicality.... whatever works best for the servers.

Dunno.. not a programmer. But it is food for thought. Also having thoughts of perhaps nitpicker can "take turns"... run rampant for 1/2 hour or so, 1/2 hour or so processing the crunches... lather rinse repeat. But that is all stuff for the downtown seti@home crew to figure out.

For the benefit of those, who were (like me) not too enthused about keeping an eye on the news:jobs limit thread:
Jeff Cobb has posted this info regarding the WU limits this time round.

in short:
CPU jobs : 5 per processor
GPU jobs : 40 per processor
total jobs : 140

GPU jobs : 40 per processor

[Nitpicking mode]

Of course that's not quite correctly said, as GPUs have multiple processors. I mean, the GTX295 I have lying here has 480 processors per GPU, and it has two GPUs. 960 processors times 40 tasks, you do that math. ;-)

He means 40 tasks per GPU, of course. :-)
