Ok slap me now, but I forget: Lets say a WU does contain a signal from an ET world. Lets say we are looking at the graphics for that WU as its being crunched. All that in mind, what would the graphics look like for a true ET signal?
I know there was a page that showed an example for the SETI@home classic, but I cannot seem to find it. So slap me now for repeating this if its already been discussed.

Sorry, thought I would try to provide a smile until someone with a serious answer showed up.

Jason,
If you were looking at the SETI@home graphic display and it actually processed a real signal from a real ET source, it would look exactly the same as all the rest of the spikes and stuff you normally see. Normally you see general radio wave interference coming for natural and man-made radio sources. So a real ET signal would look no different.
You can only weed out a real ET signal by comparing the results from hundreds or thousands of users computers over several months or years. The sky over Arecibo is very polluted with various radio interference sources. Most of it is man-made radio signals. Us humans like communicating with radio, we are a very noisy species.
Jason if you detect a real ET signal on your PC, don't worry, the whole world will hear about it.
John.

The graphics have possibly changed since the "SETI Classic" days, but I remember there used to be a screenshot on one of the Classic pages of what the signal might look like.
If you saw the signal, you would know something was different!
A quick Google for it didn't turn anything up, but maybe someone else still has it or can find it.

If your graphics display ever looks like this, then you might be on to something...or just "on something"..:)
The picture came from this page.
