As you know, the ExtraTerrestrials that supposed to have abducted Barney and Betty Hill showed them a map of their home star system. Marjorie Fish several years later concluded that this star is Zeta Reticuli.
So dear members of our community, what is your opinion about this?
Is Zeta Reticuli a suitable place of life, or even perhaps intelligent life?
What Do you believe about this map?

Based on what I read briefly about the star system itself, it does not seem to host any planets. At one point it was thought to have a Jupiter like planet, but then that was later proved to be a pulsation. Does that mean that IF aliens were there that they did not find another means to survive there? No. However, it is unlikely.

The story of their Abduction is a big thing around here. I live just outside of Portsmouth, new Hampshire where the alleged abduction took place. I often hear people talking about it when observing the somewhat dark skies around here. Their story is pretty believable and is not too far fetched as some other alleged abduction stories I have heard.

I suppose only time will tell as to whether or not this is a true story or a possibility. Maybe some day we here at the project will get a chance to crunch some WUs related to that portion of the sky.

Here is a Wikipedia Article with the said map and their story. Its a good read: Betty and Barney Hill abduction

In 1961? I doubt it. That was less than 10 years after Roswell, NM and UFOs and aliens were not even a part of life until after Roswell. So for these people, whom seem to have never had any experience or previous knowledge of the things they talked about, to make this up so early in the time of ET is not likely, though it is possible. I suppose you think the man behind the "Fire In The Sky" abduction was also "gullible?"

I do not really believe in that short of stories, but we must admitt that Zeta 2 Reticuli and our Sun are completely identical stars. Zeta 2 is a G1V Star and has 99% Sun's mass and 88% of the Sun's radius! If we could remove Sun from the sky and put at its place zeta 2 nobody would notice the difference. Iam not sure but I think that it is the only star in the known universe that looks so much with Sun!

Jason,

Ten years is plenty of time for a mass hysteria to settle in. In the late 50's my family lived on a street in Northern Virginia that had two Air force Colonels down the block from us. They were called to duty over a weekend because it was thought that a UFO was going to land somewhere in Washington DC. Here in Tennessee, Oprah Winfrey's father was a State congressman who introduced a bill to provide a landing pad for a UFO in downtown Nashville. One of my former bosses also claimed to have seen a UFO as well.

I read the book back when it came out and felt sorry for Barney and Betty in that they were hallucinating. Now I think it was a clever way to sell a few books.

No one that I know now believes that Roswell was anything other than an attempt to spy on Russia using high altitude balloons.

Notice that since world-wide television and video cameras became widely available and ubiquitous that the sightings of UFO's have gone away. If UFO's were made of solid material they would produce a terrificly loud sonic boom. No reports of sonic booms associated with any of these sightings.

That is just purely ridiculous. Anyone wasting or trying to waste tax dollars on such a thing should be impeached.

I read the book back when it came out and felt sorry for Barney and Betty in that they were hallucinating. Now I think it was a clever way to sell a few books.

Possibly, but not likely. Hallucinating maybe...but for those two to have been hallucinating, then I wouldn't see anyone, even the military taking any interest at all. Given the time frame and being a "mixed" couple, the military and others would have immediately dismissed their claims and never would have followed up on them let alone interview them so many times and for so long.

No one that I know now believes that Roswell was anything other than an attempt to spy on Russia using high altitude balloons.

From the middle of Nevada? Very doubtful. It makes no sense to have a base there to for balloon spying when they couldn't even launch them from there. And if they did they would need to launch them in masses because they would never make it over the ocean, especially with the Eastward winds. And they certainly wouldn't send them east. And some how i doubt that all the people affiliated with the crash or aftermath (civilians mostly) were hallucinating. Also note that the idea of UFOs never existed (like they do today) prior to Roswell.

Notice that since world-wide television and video cameras became widely available and ubiquitous that the sightings of UFO's have gone away. If UFO's were made of solid material they would produce a terrificly loud sonic boom. No reports of sonic booms associated with any of these sightings.

Watch youtube much? If we want to get into statistics, UFO sightings or alleged sightings have gone up dramatically in the past decade or two. In fact, the UK government acknowledged that sightings are up in their country. And do you realize we are talking about a civilization that would be significantly more advanced than us? The likelihood of them having any kind of flying technology similar to ours would be slim to none. If anything they would be so advanced their ships would make very little noise if any at all. You don't need a sonic boom for one. If you did have one, then they would have been flying so fast no one would have time to see them. I have been a witness to sonic booms related to military aircraft. That story is for a different thread though.

Zeti 1 and Zeti 2 Reticuli are on NASA's short list for study by the Terrestrial Planet Finder project when it becomes available. The European Space Agency Darwin system of satellites will also apparently be used to check for planets around these stars. It stands to reason that these agencies must think it a reasonable possibility that Earth like planets will be found there.

Jason,

If you do a little research you will see that there are inversions in temperature and atmospheric layers that act as a funnel for sound and electronic transmissions. This is true for sonar and various ocean layers as well.

There were actual listening devices hoisted up on high altitude balloons that went extremely high. They were painted silver to keep the sun from heating the gas in the ballon so it would rise very high before it burst.

What they found in Roswell was the silver coated skin of the balloon and a few structural members. It was hush-hush at the time since the GOVT didn't want to reveal their method of listening in on the Rusky's.

Quote from Wiki:
"....secret government program called Project Mogul, which involved high altitude balloons meant to detect sound waves generated by Soviet atomic bomb tests and ballistic missiles"

You can find pictures of what they found at the time:

Go there and tell me if that looks like an alien craft.

Of course its not going to "look like a UFO." Its in pieces...and very little of anything left to make a determination. And of course the government will say it was a spy mission or whatever. Since when have they told us the truth about anything? I have also seen pictures upon pictures, and seen government reports after reports and I am still not convinced. Let look back even further, about 10 years earlier, prior to Roswell...The Battle of Los Angeles in 1942. That must have been a weather balloon too? Was the military hallucinating along with everyone else? I am sorry, but you won't get me to believe that everyone who claims to have seen a UFO, or was affiliated with Roswell was hallucinating. Its ridiculous.

ahh yes always the conspiracy.

Honestly, I doubt the government is competent enough to keep anything like that a secret for 50 years. Seriously... you gotta be kidding....

There were numerous "flying saucer" sightings through out the 50's.. most of which were explained when eventually the "flying pancake" airplanes were revealed.. at the time of the tests they were "top secret". Of course they do make an occasional re-appearance near moonshiners...

I myself have seen "UFO's" Unidentified flying objects. One was flying due north at incredible speed (and altitude). Satellite? wrong orbit even for a wayward one. Too slow for any type of meteor. I checked through a friend of a friend with Air Force information. There was no "official" disclosure.

But I bet someone knew what it was. Just did not want to talk about it. So it remains.. "Unidentified". They would probably be happy to tell me.. in another 15 or so years.

Such as a photo showing what appears to be "space blanket" material on the ground. It was sold in the early 70's as a "survival" blanket, able to withstand and protect against temperature extremes.

I also believe any alien technologies would be used politically to obtain "carte blanche" expenditure for any military expenditures they could dream of. Keeping it secret would be their last course of action. But they are also not going to talk about what is in roswell. But you can do a little research and discover what HAS been in roswell.

Much like the "philidelphia experiment".. There are other explanations that make a LOT more sense than the tall tales that came in Bar room bull.

You are implying that ALL these people are "delusional." Not only is that ridiculous but next to impossible. If you count all the incidents and alleged sightings since Roswell, you are talking about millions of people.

Well,

I am being a bit harsh I suppose. People who believe in things that are highly unlikely, defy the laws of physics or are contradictory or irrational often hold their beliefs without a shred of physical evidence. I guess that you could call me a skeptic and those others "non skeptics".

In the past millions of people believed in the sun god, Thor, Zeus, Krisna, Swine flu, Y2K, etc.

In fact there were and are probably billions. Are they all right--or are they all delusional ? What do you think ?

I will be the first to repent when an alien ship or body is put on display.

Really? They knew about 9/11 before it even happened and didn't bother to tell anyone or do anything...

We assume that the laws of physics are correct, based on what we see here on Earth and in our solar system. They are all assumptions. Just because we cannot see it does not mean it doesn't exist.

In the past millions of people believed in the sun god, Thor, Zeus, Krisna, Swine flu, Y2K, etc.

And interestingly enough, those civilizations basically vanished. Egyptians, Greeks, Romans etc...

I never said ALL alleged sighting are real. There are very few that could be considered "real" or what not. I some how doubt that those billions of people are wrong.

Nobody thinks that an alien spaceship would break physical laws. They are just really smart aliens who engineered great solutions.

No one is insulting anyone. But My point was those civilizations, the ancient ones, just seem to have up and left. Why go through so much trouble to build massive pyramids and temples etc, only to just abandon them?
