First: After making "adjustments" to my Win7 Dell 540 with a Radeon 4350 video card, The base of the progress display is no longer translucent, or semi-opaque. It's normal until any of the display options start to write then it becomes opaque, which is truely an eyesore. The rare Astropulse displays just fine. Any ideas? Second: Even though I've selected in options for Astropulse only, I'm still getting MultiBeam projects only now. I don't want to run MultiBeam until I find how to fix the video problem mentioned above. I'm an old tech, but still am confident going into the reg if its necessary. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling SETI with no luck. Ok, I don't know everything... anybody out there who does? |

You can't specifically ask for only Astropulse WU in the preference. There is no toggle for AP v5.05. The best you can do is set Run only the selected applications SETI@home Enhanced: no Astropulse: yes Astropulse v5: yes If no work for selected applications is available, accept work from other applications? yes This will still give you MB WU since the number of AP created is much smaller than MB and you will get MB if no AP are available. You could stick an 'app_info.xml' file in the Seti project folder that will cause Boinc to only ask for AP. Using this file specifying only AP work is likely to leave your system idle when AP WU are not available. Sorry, but I'm not familiar enough with the format that is needed for the generic AP application to be of any help with it. Perhaps someone else could provide instructions if you want to go that route. Boinc V7.2.42 Win7 i5 3.33G 4GB, GTX470 |

I'm not quite sure about what you are speaking here, but supposing it's the screensaver, why do you use it at all? Gruß, Gundolf Computer sind nicht alles im Leben. I use the screensaver beacuse I think its pretty, kinda soothing in my urban environment. I know what the display is supposted to look like and the opaque white is really an eyesore. Eventually, if I don't figure why its not translucent then I'll remove SETI. I have a lot of unused up time on my days off and don't mind "allowing others to use my resources." Now, anybody care to help me resolve the issue as to why the display foundation opaque in multibeam but not astropulse? TIA |

I've already done that, thanks. You've explained why I was still gett MB and not AP so I'm satisfied with this. The damn opaque "floor" for the display is really irritating though... this I really want to fix. |

Now, anybody care to help me resolve the issue as to why the display foundation opaque in multibeam but not astropulse? Because they're two different applications, doing different work. The Seti_Enhanced Multibeam application is quite old, even though it's a newer separate application since the inception of BOINC 6, its code is the same as that what was included in the Seti_Enhanced application in BOINC 5 and before. Astropulse is the newer of the two - with its own screen saver, its own work - doing a completely different search than Seti_Enhanced is. Comparing these two applications is like comparing a Morris Minor to a Peterbuilt truck. Though both vehicles, they are used for quite different things, including their payload. You don't say which drivers you're using for the Radeon 4350. Windows 7's provided ones or some by AMD/ATI? All I see on your system is that they use CAL version 1.4.533, which started with Catalysts 10.2 The problem is that Windows 7 its legacy drivers are 10.2 in a dumbed down version. They don't use the OpenGL part of the drivers, as this is a direct competitor against Microsoft's DirectX. So Microsoft only ship drivers with the OpenGL part disabled or taken out. Which can cause all kinds of weird trouble on systems that run with OpenGL graphics. And as you may have guessed by now, the Seti_Enhanced graphics you see are OpenGL 1.1, which has its own set of limitations. Astropulse can, as far as I know, switch to the native renderer when OpenGL isn't found. Meaning here it can switch to using DirectX. The BOINC screen saver is a whole different beast that needs to be included into the equation. It is also able to switch between OpenGL and the native renderer. |

Yep, I went down that street too. I'm using the drivers that came with the card as the ATI website driver update didn't like my card. Everything works just fine other than the MBeam display. I don't think its the card but now I'm wondering if a Doom3 reset did something to the GL; I'll look into that later. The card was a trade off, its only 32bit but better than the onboard Intel that came with the system. My power supply wasn't quite up to snuff the run the 4600 64 bet series I wanted. Thanks for the ideas... |

Ok... it turns out there was apparently a driver conflict between MS (who would have figured?) and the Radeon drivers. I'd upgraded my video, then "upgraded" to newer drives that hosed everything. Reverting back to the standard ATI drivers restored my display but apparently something just didn't like the new config. I'll never learn... MS "suggested" newer drivers just recently so I tried them as my contrast wasn't completely stable and sure 'nuff, a trashed display again. New(er) drivers from the ATI site resored everything properly and now MB works as it should. Darn! This stuff is getting complicateder and complicateder! |

I learned a long time ago to never EVER use the MS update drivers for installed Hardware. You could use Google Earth, which has the possebillity, to run it in OpenGL or DirectX (9). Good test/check if your Display Drivers, are doing what they're supposed, to do. And let M$ Updates only give a message, if new (security)UPdates, are ready to D'Load or install. I've set it, this way, too, otherwise, my host's, sometimes REBOOT's in the middle of the night (GMT+1). Can be really anoying, unless, your host's aren't Pass-Word protected. (When 2, NON PW protected host's, were used by a Bot Net, to send large amounts of spam, I quicky changed this setting.!) When you live in the centre of a city, nowadays almost everyone has one or more computers and especially when going wireless, you have to protect your hosts, with the latest WPA2-PSK, with AES or even heavyer, encryption. I've 18 host's in my neighbourhood, which are whithin reach and this also is vice-versa...... |
