I'm sad and a little annoyed ...

While I was trying to make an online credit card donation I encountered the following problem on step 4 gift receipt :

There was a problem that occured while processing your credit card.
    For further information, please contact:
    UC Berkeley Gift Administration
    Phone: 510.643.9789
    E-mail: gahelp@berkeley.edu

After I contacted my bank, I learned that the transaction was successful and that the amount of 7.18€(10$) were forwarded to the UC BERKELEY FOUNDATION U.S.
I have already sent the mail, but I wanted you guys to ask if anyone encountered this problem before and maybe have a suggestion.

I did not occurred this error. I am in Europe too.

If this is helping you: I have a similar "UC BERKELEY FOUNDATION <some transaction code here> USA" as result from my bank, after paying using CC with no error message.

So that I think it's on right direction if your bank said money was released to "UC BERKELEY FOUNDATION" as the account of B.F.

My suggestion is just to wait a while for the money to be effectively on B.F. hand (after this I am sure B.F. will confirm your donation).
In my case this took some time (about 5 days), I think because of interbank transfer from EU/€ to USA/$.

I am not sure, but in my opinion the credit card error message may be anything, since an error code was not returned; looks for me more closed to an wrong error message (for example, regarding a timeout for confirmation of operation, not regarding a failure of operation itself), since the bank said transaction was successful.

May this will help you a little.

Everything's fine... I just received a word :-)

Thank you for your e-mail and your on-line gift. Your gift to SETI@Home did go through correctly. There have been some problems with our website for the last day or two with donors receiving error messages when the gifts have gone through correctly. I did confirm that your gift was processed correctly and generated an e-mail receipt which you should have received a short while ago

Now I can visit Mark's thread!

Anyone know if tax-efficient donations can be made to SETI from UK? Like Gift Aid or Deed of Covenant. Seems a shame not to make use of this additional money. Roger

I just want all of those that have donated to know that many of us who have not, do appreciate your gifts. Personally, I am unable to help in that respect. My computer is assembled from junk computers that I have pieced together. Otherwise, I would be unable to participate in the program. I may not live long enough to see the discovery of another civilization ( 74 years old) , but I do believe they are out there!

Thanks again to each and every one of you.

Well I do not have any credit card, I refuse using credit cards, having the perhaps unusual philosophy in todays society, that if I do not have the money to buy things, then maybe I shouldn't buy them at all.

My VISA card is a debit card, but as I said, I refuse to give out my card details online. Logging in to my bank though, I can easily transfer money to my PayPal account, but since SETI doesn't accept PayPal payment, then they obviously does not want my money.

This argument is not valid.

I also refuse to use my ATM card on the internet for any purpose but I will use my credit card and then pay off the ballance when the bill comes. No problem and no interest charges.

Sometimes I think back...

Where we have been and where we are now. The one thing that strikes me most improtantly can be viewed at SETI@home Arthur C Clarke tribute page.

One person helped to support the "ideals" that Seti was founded on. The Seti Users summed up many things about his feelings, their feelings and where we are now.

At this point it is up to the Seti Users to spread the word, and do what they can. Each of you can make a difference.

Thank you for those thoughts.....
A reminder to myself and perhaps a few others that some are doing all they can do just by making the effort to participate.

Your contribution is very much appreciated, Pete.

With Serever Problems, and Seti Users Responding. Disaster has been averted. Seti still needs operating money to survive. The Donation letter went out and each small donation helps.

It is up to each of us to do what we can to help keep Seti Alive.

Thank You

Pappa

It will last for 25 years or so to find E.T. by this project. It is hardly probable that the project can financially survive such a long period without constant donations.

In my homecountry Germany scientific projects don't need any donations by the public. But no scientific institute in Germany would start a project like seti@home because the search for E.T. is not considered to be a serious scientific attitude.

Therefore we should go on to spend some money to the project each year. Until today I've done it eight times, although I had some doubt concerning the future of the project in 2010. Let's hope that the long periods of downtime will become history in the near future.
