But for SETI, I prefer to use my Visa debit card - smaller fee charged by the handling company, better exchange rate (did someone say it was good at the moment? Must check - I'm getting close to star renewal date), and no problems at all in previous years. May I point out, that while the standard british bank card (debit card) usually comes with complete credit card number to use in such transactions, this is not the norm on the continent? While german bank cards work nicely in foreign ATMs (well nowadays at least), they do not double as credit cards. Also german credit cards incur a yearly fee, and will usually be debited to your account once a month. (That's at least how my german one works) Consequently, most germans - unless they travel a lot or do lots of online transactions outside germany - will not have a credit card. That does not leave you with a lot of options. And no, cheques are not an option. They were phased out when paying with card&PIN was introduced. a) This information may be outdated. I've been an economic refugee to the UK for the past years ;) b) There must be a workaround, I see a number of green stars in the vicinity of german flags :) c) off topic: It may seem unpatriotic, but I would prefer England to win on Sunday. I prefer not to be lynched at work come Monday. Carola ------- I'm multilingual - I can misunderstand people in several languages! |

they call them "gift cards" with the visa/mc/amex emblem on them. There are still debit cards, which you should be very careful using on the internet and elsewhere. Janice |

Works in IE8, but I normally don't have a toolbar and this toolbar is very ugly + uses yahoo for searching, I use google... Yes, it uses Yahoo and that won't get quite as many hits as Google. But I've found if I've chosen good search keywords it works pretty well. When it fails I can always try Google, but so far I've seldom needed to do that. Opera, which is my browser of choice, doesn't support the toolbar and I didn't want one anyhow. Simply adding "http://www.goodsearch.com/search.aspx?keywords=%s" to Opera's list of search engines (with "o" as the key since "g" is already used for Google) took care of it for my purposes. I also have a bookmark to eBay via Goodshop using "http://www.goodsearch.com/goshop.aspx?id=28". That takes me to www.ebay.com so it takes one more click on "Sign in" or "my eBay" to get signed in, I'm quite willing to to do that extra step to benefit S@H. Note that the percentage eBay passes to Goodsearch is a percentage of their fees on a completed transaction, so it's not a huge dollar amount. Yet my usual Spring shopping (after the snow and ice have gone and deliveries to my house are possible) seems to have made a bulge in the amounts shown for April and May (and also searches during the same period to decide whether something was worth bidding on). Or send a check by mail http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/donate_bymail.php I have the opposite view. I keep getting email to update my PayPal account but I have never had a PayPal account. So for me PayPal is a no-no. I have never had a problem using a credit card on the internet. I did have my ATM card violated when a clerk went out of my sight and wrote down the numberes. She was charging on the internet that night. Next morning the card was invalidated and the charges removed from my account. Visa charge card works good at Seti. I am a proud SETI supporter here. Everytime you forward those e-mails to Paypal, they nip them in the butt. Thank you all for your contributions. You have no clue on how much it takes to run this project, besides our massive personal electricity usage. Pluto will always be a planet to me. Seti Ambassador Not to late to order an Anni Shirt |

Or send a check by mail http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/donate_bymail.php The last I heard... Shortly after that it was published that SEti@home will be doing PayPal. A portion of what has happened is that Seti User in the there small donations month after month have impressed those in the Finance Department. Each of you that donates time after time has demonstrated that Seti should be considered. So what I understood was UCB Web Developers had to come up with a "compatible" interface to allow PayPal. Becuase it is not a fully funded programming project is it put off, put off and still on the when they get time list. Those that are currently donating in the Comments Please put in the words to the effect... "Paypal would be nice!" Please consider a Donation to the Seti Project. |

-[ snip ]- Greetings Robert, [off-topic] Your posting style looks oddly familiar. A style I haven't seen in a couple 3 years. I just do not remember the source from back then... [/off-topic] I will have to give Goodsearch some consideration. My 2 issues with it are:

Well any donation is better than none, so until UBCA or whoever see the light and sort out a PayPal interface a donation by searching using Goodsearch is better than no donation. Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

PayPal would be nice, it's true! :) BTW, could Goodsearch's eBay access be used simultaneously with let say Ebates or Bing ? |

How Goodsearch will know if search done via such link what charity to support? And second question, what should be done to add Goodsearc supporting SETI charity as default search provider in IE8 ? (to allow search w/o their own toolbar) |

baring paypal (I will never have an account with them again.. long story) Most credit card providers will probably be happy to charge gift cards to your account.. in 20/50/100/? increments I believe. I would be amazed if they were un-available in europe. While not free they can be useful.. and certainly cheaper than some of the exchange fees mentioned here. Janice |

Simply adding "http://www.goodsearch.com/search.aspx?keywords=%s" to Opera's list of search engines (with "o" as the key since "g" is already used for Google) took care of it for my purposes. To get started you just go to www.goodsearch.com where there's a place to enter the charity you want to support. It's a search function of the charities they have listed, just seti@home will find the right one. Then you confirm it's what you want and they set a cookie in your browser. After that all searches you do through them, or using their links to go to one of their shopping partners, etc. will generate revenue for the chosen charity unless you specifically change to another charity. I can't answer concerning IE8, don't have it and don't want it. My daily driver is Win98SE so I doubt it would even install. Joe |

Ok, thanks. That is, if I already used their toolbar in IE8 properly configured on SETI cookie was set already so I can just add corresponding URL in search providers list. |

When you install the Goodsearch toolbar it's doesn't add Goodsearch in the IE8 search providers list, but you simply install the IE plugin on the GS install page. |

The same thing works with firefox, install the plugin and it adds it to the dropdown list. When you use it it donates to the charity (SETI) you picked on the Goodsearch homepage. PROUD MEMBER OF Team Starfire World BOINC |

I see so many excuses for not donating financially to SETI. The most often used is.......... I give my time and I pay for the electricity to run Boinc and SETI on my computers. So I am already donating to SETI. I do not accept that a further financial donation is required from me. What they fail to understand is that everyone here gives that same time and money for electricity and computers to run Boinc on. In this respect we are all giving to SETI. Some more than others depending on the number of machines each has but we are all donating to SETI. Now comes financial donations which are vital to the future well being of the SETI project. Let's face the facts here. A financial participation rate of 0.23% of the crunchers is dismal by any standards and sets up the SETI project for failure. We see the effects of this dismal donation rate all the time. Berkeley's servers can go down at any time when no one is in the office. They can go down and they do go down. Who knows if it's hardware or software related, the fact is, Berkeley's servers cannot run without constant human intervention. Server hardware, personal to run SETI, all take money. Funding for SETI cannot come from Boinc development. If SETI cannot suport itself then there are plenty of other small projects that Boinc can use for it's development. Boinc development does NOT require or need SETI. Boinc only requires a test project and that could be any project. A SETI project downtime of 3 days per week? What I hear is that Boinc does not need SETI any longer. What I hear is that SETI is slowing down Boinc development. What I hear is that the SETI project is no longer viable. What I hear is that SETI can no longer be supported by Boinc. So the question remains. How devoted are you to finding ET? How devoted are you to the SETI project? Are you devoted enough to make a financial donation of 5 cents per day? How about a donation of .38 cents per week? Both of these mean making a donation of $20.00 USD per year. Is the SETI project worth $20.00 per year to you? How about $50.00 per year? As I see it, if SETI does not support itself then the SETI project will die. Boinc does not need or require the SETI project. Boinc....Boinc....Boinc....Boinc.... |

From HP: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/sah_donate.php "PayPal users: We have temporarily suspended direct paypal donations due to some communications difficulties. Our apologies for the inconvenience." From HP: Private Message Eric Korpela, ask him about the details of his Paypal account, tell him your userID number, send your money through Paypal to Eric's account, wait for his confirmation and see a green star (if you want to). It's how I did it. |
