Recently I've been getting a lot of "Waiting for memory" on the tasks tab, both for SETI and other projects. What's the deal, should I change the prefs somehow?

Two possibilities: Buy more RAM and change the settings on how much RAM BOINC is allowed to use.

You need to raise the two values % for "Memory usage":
