Hi: I have been a member of SETI@Home since 2003 and I am concerned about the number of times and duration of server crashes and other network issues related to SETI@Home. There seem to be a lot of time loss being offline. It did not seem to be like this until recently. Does anybody else share my observation? Is SETI@Home a victim of its own success? Clive |

Hi: Partly a victim of its own success at getting crunchers, and partly a victim of its shoe string budget. The budget is entirely made up of donations of cash from the volunteers that also do the crunching. BOINC WIKI |

Matt Lebofsky explained it very well in Perfect Storm, Inc. (Jun 16 2010). :-) |

Clive, I have been having the same experiences with two of the three servers with which I'm connected. In the "Good Old Days" my computers would work for a week or more before the SETI servers were taken down for maintenance or whatever. Of late I've noticed that one of them is actually down for more time that it is up and operating, i.e. runs for 6-8 hours and then quits for 4-5days at a time. Even more insidious is the current practice of not even telling us when a server is down. For the last 4 days the screen savers have just continued with the figures for the last live session but with no change in the numbers (statistics). I also have a problem with one of the servers which refuses to run the "oscilloscope" type of screen saver and will only show me the "BOINC" logo. Poor, poor, put upon us! We try so hard. :-) El Geezero |

Under assorted user names I started with SETI at home right about the time it did. For years I never had any problems. Indeed there was a time when I could download twenty units at a time. Now I never know if I can get one or if I will be able to upload results from completed units. This site is sure the victim of something. |
